Review: Lost octave - The notes did not carry on up the scale, it missed out almost a whole octave.
Review: Good sound, good value for money, a little slippery and slightly unbalanced in the second chamber - Note: I've updated this review from 4 to 5 stars and added some notes at the end of this review. This was my first double ocarina, and I waited until I bought and played another one before writing this review so that I had something to compare it to. First of all, this is probably the easiest double ocarina to get hold of in the UK and the price is definitely reasonable. I personally like the look of it and like the colour, although there are nicer looking ocarinas out there. It also comes with a neck strap which is cool. The sound in the main chamber is very nice. My other ocarinas both have a very "pure" sound to them (they are both Focalink Dolce ocarinas) which can start to get a bit annoying after a while, whereas this one has a nice bit of texture. It requires a fair bit of breath to play it, especially the high notes, so at first I just thought it sound airy but with a bit of practice I got the hang of it and now I really like the sound. The main problem with the sound is that the transition between the two chambers is a lot less than ideal. All multi-chamber ocarinas have this problem to some degree, but this one has it a little more than my focalink dolce. I also feel that there is quite a significant difference in breath required for the two chambers, so you have to blow a bit gentler in the second chamber. With a bit of practice this isn't really an issue though. The holes are very easy to cover on this ocarina. I rarely have any problems covering them, as opposed to the focalink dolce where I find it really hard to play the E in the second chamber correctly. The one thing that makes me hesitant to pick this ocarina up and play with it is that I find it a little bit difficult to grab hold of and keep in my hands. When I'm playing, especially in an extended passage, I often start to feel the ocarina sliding out of my fingers and have to reposition them. Again, this is something that you can get used to and it did get easier for me, but when I come back to it after playing my other ocarinas it feels a bit slippery. Overall I think this is a pretty good ocarina, especially considering the price and how easy it is to get hold of. It's quite loud, has a nice, textured tone and is very easy to finger. The glaze is very nice but a little too smooth, making it slippery, and the chambers could be better balanced, but its still a good choice of ocarina and a capable instrument. EDIT 6th May 2016 After owning this for a while, I think I've changed my mind about this ocarina. This has become my go to ocarina for a while now. The sound of this ocarina is very nice, and with a bit of practice the two chambers seem to sound a lot more balance. I also haven't noticed it slipping out of my hands for a long time, possibly due to the finish becoming slightly less smooth after handling it a lot. For the price I paid, I think this is a really good ocarina!
