I always took 2 capsules valerian and 2 capsules melissa (aka lemon balm). Got a great night's sleep and felt great the next day, no side effects. Non-habit-forming. Five stars.Last year I got a bottle of it that didn't work! I tried it several nights and stayed wide awake for hours. Zero stars.While wondering what was wrong, I noticed the capsules in this bottle did not have the classic valerian "dirty socks" smell. (Note: I don't think there was a placebo situation-- these capsules failed to work for several nights before I noticed they had no valerian smell.)Decided maybe the batch was bad so bought another bottle. Opened it, sniffed it, and recognized the reassuring bad smell of actual valerian. Capsules in this bottle worked!I used up that bottle and just picked up a different brand at the local health food store. Oops-- I opened it and there's no valerian smell even though this brand tells you on the label to look for the distinctive smell. Uh oh. Just ordered more Natures Way in case this new kind doesn't work but because of my past experience I wonder whether my next bottle of Natures Way will smell like valerian and work or not. It usually does but not always!My conclusions: when it smells like real valerian, it works for me. When it lacks that smell it doesn't work -- presumably because it's either not real valerian or it's an old batch that has lost potency.This is a GREAT product most of the time, but is occasionally worthless. Thanks to the infamous valerian smell, I don't have to wonder whether this herb just mysteriously stopped working for me -- when it didn't work it didn't smell like valerian.A word to the few one-star reviewers who couldn't deal with the smell: isnt a good night's sleep worth a few seconds of a bad smell? Get your glass of water ready, hold your breath, and go for it! Or get your doctor to prescribe you a drug, but they can have bad side effects and be habit-forming. Nature's Way has that great poopy smell that is the sign of fresh Valerian and the value is better than anything else I have found.
