### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Recommend to all sci fi lovers!
*by T***A on 20 August 2017*

Having been a fan of sci fi in general, film, TV and of course video games, I decided to watch this series. When I read the general synopsis of the show : post apocalyptic modern times, aliens, human courage and determination, unspeakable odds, I thought "YEAH!! Bring it on!!", I'm so glad I wasn't disappointed. I will try to be spoiler free! The characters themselves are very good, and they actually grow and continue developing as the series progresses. There were a few that I initially hated because of their behaviour or personality, but amazingly enough, as more and more was revealed about them, I actually became more sympathetic to them and my opinion completely changed. Alot of people died over the course of the story(not in a cheap shock value way that practically sums up everything about game of thrones) Sometimes the character deaths made me really sad at times because they had all grown on me. The aliens themselves were also quite interesting, there are different types (only a few though), some good, some bad, and the reasons why they attacked, their motivations etc are solid and believable. The special effects are fine, you know how it can be awkward, embarrassing and cringey to see cheap CGI in B movie, with equally embarrassing acting?(Yes I have unfortunately suffered through things like that) Well not to worry, everything is fine in falling skies, I was glued to the screen, the acting was heart felt and genuine, and the aliens and effects were very good. I had no issues with the pacing, I felt that there was the right mix of action and stuff going to hell, and it was nice to see the characters take whatever time they could to try and be normal. Things like having a small birthday party for a child who might never survive to grow up, remembering the friends who fell or made sacrifices, and trying to nurture love in face of the bleak odds. There is alot of depth and things to read between the lines at times and I really liked that. There were some good twists as well. The way the series ends might irk some people because it's a happy ending, but I was glad and relieved, I watched these people struggle and experience so much hardship, so I was really happy things worked out. I was really drawn into the show! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some of the things people find fault with the series is quite laughable. Some viewers did't like Tom Mason, and they hate his speeches. Well times were tough, he had to keep morale up, if you lose hope in a situation like that then you may as well just give up the fight, let the aliens destroy you. Game over humanity. And complaining about it being too patriotic just sounds like anti-american propaganda. The series is set in America, and the 2nd Mass, historically speaking was a real civilian regiment that came together under trying circumstances, and I find it an excellent metaphor for many things in the series. (Disclaimer: I am not American, but I did side with the minutemen in Fallout 4, so yeah I quite passionate about protecting anyone in need!) Some people seem surprised that they had a good supply of ammunition. It did say in the synopsis that only 10% of humanity was left alive, plus guns are legal in America and there are loads of gunshops, with the odd military installation everywhere. So..... ammunition wouldn't be that hard to find.... The alien design was criticized, being 'too human', which is laughable considering how humans have killed each other for stupid reasons due to 'ethnic differences' etc. I don't want to name said aliens because that would be spoilers, but come on, the show didn't have infinite financial resources. For example, ever wondered why the aliens in star trek are mostly humanoid? Because it takes alot of time to produce believable aliens and the actors have to wear costumes/prosthetics that are not to difficult to get in/out of every day for filming. These shows are walking the fine line of finance and time constraints with filming and trying to create something fantastically compelling that people want to see. Falling skies relied on alot of green screen and CGI, which takes time to be done properly. Some designs are obviously more practical. I give Falling skies 10/10, and I'm so glad to be able to own and watch it again. I hope my review was helpful and spoiler free, to anyone who wants a good sci fi series with depth, good characters, moral dilemmas, unshakable odds, and saving the world!
