I was very meticulous about placing the magnetic ring correctly, but it is less easy to precisely fix the phone to the magnetic mount (It can also slip a couple of mm during driving) and I think even a small misalignment can lead to current running through the ring, wastefully, and generating heat and very slow charging. I think magnetic mounts are great. I think wireless charging is great. Combine the two and I think there is too much potential for problems. Maybe there is a better way to design these things, perhaps with individual small plates instead of a continuous ring, but this is not the design for me.Original Review============Nicely packaged and presented and smart looking. I fitted this yesterday and gave it its first test drive today of 2x12 minute journeys. I have a Galaxy S7 in a Spigen Neo Hybrid case.I didn't want to use the air vents, but in order to position the mount in the perfect place I had no choice. Unfortunately my dash doesn't have a suitable place to stick the metal mount without placing the phone behind the control stalks or well away from my natural line of sight while driving. That means I need the air vent closed off during winter in order to not bake the phone.So, the position is perfect and no signs so far off rattling loose or jiggling about. The magnets are strong enough to hold the phone securely through the case with the ring stuck to the back of the phone. Without the case in place I think the magnets would actually be annoyingly strong, making it difficult to remove the phone easily without yanking the mount from its position.I used the supplied charger with an Anker cable. Nothing wrong with the supplied cable, which I tested, but I'm on a crusade to standardise all my USB cables to Anker Powerline. In the first 12 minute journey the phone increased charge from 77% to 81% whilst running Waze. In the second journey I didn't check the final figure, but the charge was again increasing whilst running Torque Pro. So all good on the charging front. I didn't really pay attention to phone temperature while charging, but I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary when removing the phone. I was quite meticulous about positioning the metal ring, paying reference to the ifixit teardown photos and measuring to centre the ring perfectly over the coil.So, all in all, a great experience so far for me. However, it's worth noting that the range of angular adjustment is quite restricted. I think with vent mounting that would not be a problem, but for dash mounting I think you'd need a relatively vertical surface. You can't stuck it in top of the dash as it would just face the phone skyward. Another small niggle - I used the phone to pay for groceries on the way home and it did seem that NFC was more finicky. It worked, but I had to move the phone around a little where normally it would be an instant first time success.Edit : today I did a bit more testing with some good and some bad to add. Bad news - with the car toasty warm, but the vents not blowing air onto the phone it became very warm indeed. According to Accubattery the phone was getting a nice charge - 500-800mA - but hit 43C, which seems uncomfortably high for prolonged battery life. Switching the lead from the mount to the phone the current went up to about 1,000 mA and the temperature dropped to 32C. This might be showstopper.On a more positive note, I tried the phone without the case, which should help cooling, a little, and while the magnets were much stronger there was no problem to remove the phone and the mount stayed put.I need to repeat temperature testing, but I'm not hopeful. I don't see such temperatures with my desktop wireless chargers. 5 stars down to 3 for now.Edit 2 : I have performed testing indoors with a regular desktop wireless charger and, fast wireless chargers and this car charger. Absolutely no problem with temperatures on any charger, including this one. Max temp was 27C, and that's indoors without airflow. I then switched things up a gear and used an 18W charger on the car unit. Charging current rose, as did temperature, but it stabilised at 32.1C maximum. The phone did feel warm, but not hot or at risk.I've attached a photo of minute by minute charging current, battery % and temperature, with an extended session at the top from this product and the 18W charger.
