The first impression when you lift it is that it is an airy ceramic, yes, cheaply made. But when I use it full with coffee, if it was heavier it would be an uncomfortable cup to hold. So I can't hold the weight against it. I am health conscious and was going to be influenced by it coming from China. But I have a variety of cups because I like different looking cups when I'm enjoying my coffee in the morning; and it dawned on me that I don't know where most of them come from. Not the smartest logic, but replacing them all is a project for down the road. As for it heating up in the microwave, I don't use one, so it's not an issue for me. It is as lovely looking in person as the picture shows it to be. However, the handle breaks very easy as it is hollow, all it takes is for the cup to tip over on a hard surface. They are cheap, lightweight material that you could get for much less elsewhere. Do not buy these. The first set I got were broken on arrival so I requested a replacement, which I got.
