And the plastic looks like easily scratched, Manufacturer could have included a protecting pouch or sth.2 The front lens is not very clear, but I guess it shouldn't be a major issue under water since water is not completely transplant eitherUpdate:On my last trip to a beach, I found there's one problem with this housing: The front lens easily get fogged under water, Probably because the water is cooler than the air. Warm, damp air trapped inside the house condenses when the camera goes underwater. But I can't figure out why only the front lens got fogged, other part of the housing are fine, but ironically, that's the only part that fog actually matters ... ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great case, just some precautions. *by K***H on Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2014* This is an amazing case. Well worth the price. I took amazing photos (and videos) underwater that look great and I'm just a regular guy with a camera taking vacation photos. If you buy this, consider two things: 1) You cannot zoom, there is no access to turn the lens. Not a big deal to me, especially if I'm swimming around anyway. 2) This housing will cause fog on the inside of the case if hot and/or humid outside. The temperature outside was hot, so I believe it does a greenhouse affect to the camera and will need to be opened often to not overheat the camera; this will help with any fog issues. If you are taking the camera and case out from your hotel room, make sure the camera and housing is acclimated to the humidity first before encasing the camera (at least allow 30 minutes); this will also help the fog. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Better than I expected *by K***A on Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2014* I've managed to kill a couple of supposedly rugged, waterproof cameras. They just don't seem to last through the warrantee period, even. They all are "waterproof" versions of normal point-and-shoots, with fiddly little seals on all the trap doors and stuff, and they just leak. Worse, they work like cheap point-and-shoots; lots of pictures of where fish had been. Slow!For years I used to use a hard plastic case with a Canon digital ixus, it worked pretty well, never had problems. Finally gave it up, gave the little ixus to a granddaughter, along with the housing, and started trying made for the purpose "underwater" cameras. Should have kept the Canon, except it was slow, too.Nikon recently introduced an underwater version of the Nikon 1 series, the AW1, but it's about $800 and early reports are that, guess what! the little trap doors can leak. Oh, joy; an $800 camera that lets in salt water. That's a big glass of "nope!"But the Nikon 1 series is fast, easy to work with, and if you buy used, refurb, or discontinued, a bargain. Dedicated underwater housings from the camera manufacturers and from names like Ikelite are super expensive, but Meikon, a Chinese company, makes inexpensive ones for several of the more popular cameras, including the Nikon 1 series. This is one of them; they all seem to come from the same manufacturer but are marketed under a bunch of names and peddled on ebay for about the same price. I bought this one from Amazon because I trust Amazon to make it good if there's a problem.It works fine; doesn't leak to depths well beyond what I'm going to do, easy to set up, not too bulky, almost all the controls are there, and with the big display screen of the Nikon J1, it's much easier to use than the tiny display on the old Canon or for that matter, a GoPro. And if you've ever seen GoPro still photos, you know why that's not even on my list of cameras to consider. The J1 has killer fast focus and exposure control and is a breeze to use when you're distracted by breathing, swimming, and generally surviving, so this is almost a perfect match. A good J1 can be had used for a bit over $100, and a refurb now and again for about $150, so with the cost of the housing, it's cheaper than the supposedly ruggedized point and shoots. Plus, it's a real, mostly, camera, with good image quality, fast response, etc. No more pictures of places where fish used to be. This gets 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons;1. you can't zoom. Not a fatal flaw, I just set the zoom lens for wide angle anyway. In fact, they have versions for the J/V 1 with the 10 mm pancake lens, no zoom anyway. Just know that you can't zoom. Unlike one of the other reviewers, this is not necessary to operate the camera and in fact, is a pain; a telephoto underwater is a bad idea anyway. You get pictures of places where fish used to be. I suspect the other reviewer never tried to operate a complex camera, with zoom, while diving. Most of the controls you'll ignore anyway; who wants to be fiddling with white balance, iso, etc while diving? Set this stuff before you get wet and jump in (hint; deep shade white balance is a good starting point underwater). Just go for a wide to medium angle and everything will be fine. Oh; you can, of course, switch to video, or Nikon's best picture option that grabs 20 frames and keeps the best, while in use. The only control you can't use is zoom.2. it's incredibly buoyant. This can be a good thing if you need something to hold on to, but not so good if you're diving. It takes a good-sized chunk of steel bolted to the bottom with the handy ¼-20 tripod socket to make it neutrally or slightly buoyant. If they supplied a weight, I'd bump it up to a full 5 stars, which says how important i consider this as opposed to the zoom, or lack of. As it is, I had to find my own weight (hardware store steel thing, doesn't matter what it's designed for as long as it weighs about a half pound and has a hole in it) and screw, clearly not a fatal flaw.Overall, I'm pleased. It's a little cruder than an Ikelite, the seal design is different, it rubs the o-ring instead of squeezes it, but so did the expensive Canon housing and it worked for years. The latch seems like a vulnerable point, it's two plastic hooks and a squeeze mechanism, i put a little silicone grease on them so they wear less on the metal closures (grease provided with the housing, by the way, for the o-ring, of which there is also a spare). The latch is an over-center design, so it will stay closed even if the hooks go away, which I don't expect any time soon, I'm just being hyper critical. It's not going to come open. Trust me, you have to work at it above water, squeeze the latch things, and with water pressure on it, you'd have to pry it apart. Not gonna happen.I live in Hawai'i and hit the water on a regular basis. This is now my regular snorkeling camera; a Nikon J1 and this housing. I would recommend this combination, or any other small, decent mirror less camera and this brand of housing, in a heartbeat. Can't beat it for triple the price.
