Fascinating, and you may well question, which of the four held the most 'hatred' for their fellow humans. An eye opener in arm chair and professional psychology.
Review: Provocative and dramatic - This is a transcript of a Munk Debate on the motion: “Be it resolved, what you call political correctness, I call progress”. The debate took place on 18 May 2018. The debaters were Michael Eric Dyson and Michelle Goldberg on the “pro” side versus Jordan Peterson and Stephen Fry on the “con” side. My natural position was on the con side and having read the debate, it affirms my position. For me, the con side has won, so was the audience result on the day. I underline my books when I read. I underline far more heavily on the con side than the pro side. Is this just because of the confirmation bias? It may be but it is also possible that it reflects the con side has more noteworthy arguments than the pro side. In particular, Professor Dyson did not do his cause any favour. He is an angry man and irritable, ingrained in identity politics that he cannot consider any other possibility. It is Marxist in nature; the difference is that instead of class struggle, it now becomes race and gender struggle. Ironically he demonstrated the danger of identity politics that Peterson warned about on stage in how he debated. He was the only one who lost his temper and shouted out “mean, mad white man” in the debate and he would not retract it but dug a hole deeper for himself and for his cause. He was the one who boasted his credentials more than others and then said that others had difficulty accepting his brilliance because of his colour. Oh well, who is identifying him by colour except himself? He demonstrates perfectly why critical race theory is dangerous and toxic, divisive and belligerent. They are not only ready to fight by ready to start a fight anytime, calling people names and unable to see past the labels they have assigned to others. He summarises post debate in these words: “what I tried to express was that we didn’t have political correctness as long as straight white men were in charge.” All things are about race, gender and sexuality but how about competence and integrity? Ironically he proved Peterson’s points. They are indeed toxic ideas and overflowing with hatred. It sounds like a declaration of war – an eradication of white men, yes, by colour and by gender. Stephen Fry on the other hand argues from a different angle. He is a leftist but a soft one by his own admission. What he is trying to say is that he agrees with their goal but he disagrees with the path they have chosen to take us there. It does not work and it is ineffective. Worse it plays into the hands of the Right too because it is a wrong move. I think what he means is that political correctness aliens people so much that it makes the Right stronger. I think how the debate developed has itself proven his point too. The conclusion is indeed political correctness gone mad! Watch out and be concerned.
