They all have a liner in the bottom that can be easily removed to move pieces from the box to the puzzle area, or to a different box. **Q: How big are these boxes? I can't seem to find dimensions anywhere** A: The largest one of these nesting boxes is approximately the size of a folded shirt gift box. The largest box has a lid ang the smaller boxes nestle snuggly inside the bottom of the largest box but do not have lids. The depth of the boxes is approximately 1". I found the boxes to be perfect for sorting 1000 piece puzzles by color - large enough that portions of the pieces on the bottom layer could easily be seen when the upper layers were pushed gently aside. The other great feature was that the boxes were deep enough that even when 1000 piece puzzles were sorted into only 3 of the boxes they could still be stacked safely without spilling. Combining the boxes with a separate game board is a perfect way to be able to put the puzzle out of the way if the table surface needs to be used for some other purpose. **Q: Please describe the bottom insert. Is it useful?** A: Not as far as I am concerned. The boxes are useful, though overpriced . . . way overpriced, but the point of the insert is lost on me. **Q: Do the pieces in the tray remain right side up in transit?** A: Yes for all the trays except the smallest one (the purple one) which doesn't have another tray resting inside it to keep the pieces within trapped in one place. You could always put something inside this tray yourself (a couple of magazines, maybe?) and then all pieces would be travel safe. There are two parts to them, a lift out piece, giving the user additional space for putting your puzzle together. They are very sturdy and colorful, very fun to use. My only minor complaint is that because they are sturdy, they are also a bit on the heavy side but nothing to lower my 5 star rating. Also I find the price a little high considering that they are only boxes. However, I love them and would highly recommend them for anyone who enjoys doing jigsaw puzzles. These beautifully crafted cardboard trays make organizing your puzzle pieces a real joy. Each one has an insert that comes out so you can slide what you are working on, right on the puzzle without picking it up and having it fall apart. The trays slip into each other and stack easily to keep your working area neat and organized. Besides these trays, I also got a cheaper version, made by another company. They are also trays that fit into each other, but the insideas are raw cardboard, not quite as finished, but quite a bit less expensive than these. They are good when first starting a jigsaw puzzle, when you need about 20 trays to hold all the different categories of puzzle pieces.
