This is one of several lifetime medications prescribed by my vision veterinary for my little rescue. He uses it with little drama and I sourced it on Amazon because it was a third of the cost of the vet. Sorry, that doesn't really answer your question. **Q: Is this effective in cleaning hard crusty area where tears dry?** A: This is for dry eye and redness. You can find an eyewash pad similar to a human's eyewash pad for the crusty tears. **Q: How does his compare to Optimmune? Or has anyone used this in place of Optimmune?** A: I was prescribed Optimmune for my beagle. I read other reviews where people switched to Optixcare from Optimmune (because of price) and were fine with it. As previous reviews say Optimmune creates tears Optixcare does not. I have to use more Optixcare (1 drop 3x a day for life) as opposed to twice a day for Optimmune. I do notice his eyes get a bit red around the edges if I don’t keep up with the regimen (at one point his eyes got really red and he was rubbing both his eyes with his paws so I used sea salt in warm water and wipes with a flat cotton round for a few days twice a day and he recovered.) his eyes get red and dry. Optimmune also makes his eyes streak tears down his face which constantly mat his facial fur but I have to say it does work better than Optixcare in keeping his eyes moist as it is oil based not water based like Optixcare. So, it’s really up to your preference and how well your dog tolerates or benefits from either.
