So one of the things I noticed first was that the daily lessons were geared for an August-June school year, rather than just having blank calendar pages the child could fill in. Starting off-cycle means many of the lesson plans have to be adjusted... we just do this on the fly, but I wanted to mention it.The grading sheets have also been a trick to figure out -- the set includes grading sheets for an entire class of children, rather than just the one (or two) children most homeschool families might be instructing. So you use one measly line of the grading sheet for your child. Again, this is not a deal-breaker, but seems like a lazy adaptation of these materials for homeschoolers.The assessments (oral and written), timed drills, and daily practice worksheets have been great. The lessons are clear and easy to do. And sometimes fun! We like using the manipulatives. This was a good purchase.Everything comes three-hole punched, so we keep it in a three-ring binder. I worried about teaching my daughter math but this makes it easy! She went to a charter school for kindergarten who used the saxon first grade level and she excelled in math. Now that we are homeschooling we are using Saxon and she is still excelling and we are loving the lessons.The concepts are gently introduced among lots of review in a spiral method. Various teaching methods are used to convey the concepts over several lessons so that they get it. And when they understand a concept-they won't forget it! They use the concept learned and develope it further. Perfect!The math manipulatives kit is highly recommended. It's part of the lessons.
