Review: An Excellent Reference Book. - This book, published by Oxford University Press, is an excellent, well-documented history of The Netherlands from ~1477-1803, including Martin Luther's Reformation movement thru to the Napoleanic era. Most anything you want to know about Dutch political/cultural history can be found here, and so it is a superb text/reference book. However, outside of academic circles, this book is a frozen tome of over 1,200 pages, written in a dry, choppy, piece-meal fashion, little focus on the real struggles of the Dutch people that most readers would appreciate- the Reformation, the Spanish military occupation, its part in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, the 17th Century Dutch Renaissance, and there is no more than a passing reference to the great William Of Orange, assassinated in 1584, who is considered by many to be the Father of modern Netherlands. And let us not forget the exalted place the Netherlands has carved out in the last 2 centuries as an icon of international peace and cooperation. I would recommend this book as a superb reference book, but not for the general reader.
Review: The book is in basically fine shape, save for the defect I mentioned. - It's not quite as new as claimed, but it is close. In fact, I hesitate to return the book through normal channels because it IS a valuable book, which another purchaser looking to buy a hardcover copy in good shape might be perfectly happy with, if it were not damaged and dinged in the return process. I am going to return it in a box with the bubble wrap, in the hope that it gets back to where it can be sold again in good condition. Advise me on how best to do this.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ History of the Dutch Republic
*by B***S on November 8, 2013*

I enjoy the wide-spread view of history that is available in nearly every Oxford or Cambridge history publication. To be sure it takes a long time to write not only on the political events of the subject country, but also to write on the cultural and social conditions of the particular epoch which is being discussed. For example this book is over 1200 pages long and that is quite typical. Still John Lathrop Motley wrote only on political events with very little of the economic, social and cultural backgorunds of those political events and he filled three volumes in his "Rise of the Dutch Republic" (1856) and then continued with four more volumes of subsequent history--"the United Netherlands" (1860 & 1867). Having read those seven volumes I found this single volume to be much more rewarding.
