Girdling, the practice of removing a strip of bark tissue has been in use for centuries to increase fruit size and bring the harvest about sooner on certain types of fruit trees. Review: Works to girdle invasive trees - Fast and easy to use. I often girdle Chinese Parasol trees and Mimosa trees and apply 25% glyphosate solution to the exposed xylem/phloem to prevent resprouting from the roots. Girdling trees creates standing dead trees that are a potential hazard or a future "blowdown" on a trail. I only use the method deeper in the woods, away from trails and frequented areas. I am always uncomfortable when I am working in an area with standing dead trees (dead falls). Review: Durable, thick cutting edge, so effective only on larger tree limbs & trunks - Effective only on fairly mature trees with sizable branches, as the cutting edge is not super sharp and is sturdy.
