Collagen is an important element in the fibrous tissues of the body. The protein provides scaffolding to support skin, makes joints operate smoothly, and is important in tendons and ligaments. So, is taking collagen in capsules an effective way to enhance the body's own collagen?There's the question of how much collagen makes it intact through the digestive process, which is designed to break down proteins among other things, and how much of it is absorbed into the body - and whether it boosts collagen levels once it arrives. I suspect it would take detailed molecular studies to determine this directly; the evidence for the benefits of collagen supplements joint health seems to be based on observed gross health effects - how people feel.The ingredients listed on the bottle include Natural Eggshell Membrane (NEM), UC-II (Natural collagen concentrate) and gelatin, rice flour, and vegetable lubricant. NOTE: IF you have an allergy to eggs, you should use caution before trying this. There is no warning label on the bottle other than "Contains: egg".Collagen can be obtained from a number of natural sources, such as ground-up fish, cow, pig and chicken parts, etc. As such, there is concern that collagen derived from animal tissues may also include less desirable ingredients: heavy metals, antibiotics, viruses, etc. Processing and testing is important. NEM as a collagen source probably avoids many of those issues, but it never hurts to be sure.There is a disclaimer in fine print on the label. By marketing this as a food supplement instead of a drug, it is not covered by FDA jurisdiction under the rigorous testing that would be mandated to back up those claims.Ideally, there would be two kinds of testing done. A double-blind study would take a test group of people whose medical condition was documented before the study, and give them two different capsules. One would be the supplement, the other would be an inert capsule. Neither the people taking the capsules or the people handing them out would know which is which. After a test period was done, all of them would be checked to see how their health changed (for better or worse) - and only then would the groups be matched up to which capsules they took.A longitudinal study would follow a group taking the supplement for an extended period of time while monitoring their health. They would be compared with a comparable group not taking the supplement. This would give an idea of long-term health benefits - and risks.If studies of either type have been done for this product, I am not aware of them - which may mean nothing, since I am not doing an extensive search. YMMV. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Eggshell membrane and collagen for joint health *by E***4 on Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2018* I study supplementation and believe that by taking the right vitamins and supplements positive health changes occur. I like the ingredients in the formula and think they could have a positive impact on joint health. I have learned that eggshell membrane has glucosamine and is being studied for joint health. I supplement with collagen already but not with the same type found in this formula. I believe collagen has a positive impact on my body based on studies I have read. I like that the ingredients that are found in the formula have been clinically studied. However, I did not feel an impact with this particular formula and wonder if this actual formula has been clinically studied. I do not feel that thirty pills in the bottle are enough to see whether or not the formula will work. I took it as directed and I did not feel a positive change during the month I have taken it. Perhaps it is not strong enough or I am not in such pain that I would notice the impact. I prefer taking my usual supplement routine that has more ingredients for both bone and joint health then this formula. I think it is headed in the right direction and with an increased pill amount and perhaps stronger ingredients I would consider re-ordering. ### ⭐⭐ Not for me *by C***G on Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2018* This supplement may be helpful to some and I liked the idea of protein being supplied via eggs since I'm allergic to meat, however the product disagrees with me. After taking it for about a week, I got to feeling poorly, not really sick, but bloated, uncomfortable and with pain in my liver area. Since I rarely get sick and my innards function well, I didn't know what to make of it, but decided to eat only the mildest of things and lay low for a couple of days. That meant stopping supplements too. I'd put aside regular ones anyway in order to give this product an honest try. After a few days I felt fine again and assumed it was due to something I ate or a bug of some sort. I started back taking the product in order to finish the bottle before reviewing. I didn't expect my aching joints to feel better immediately so wasn't surprised that I noticed no difference there, but after three days taking the supplement again, I'm again feeling poorly with liver pain and bloating. Now I fear it's the supplement itself that just doesn't agree with me.
