The rubber barrel is sealed at one end so there is no danger of one of the lids coming off as with some other barrels. The lid is really tight fitting so no seepage although it can be a bit tricky to get on and off if you have arthritic fingers. When the machine is running it is so quiet you are hardly aware of it operating, unlike plastic barrels which are really noisy. It came with a quantiy of steel shot and a frothing polishing compound, the latter being very economical as only a small amount (around a teaspoon) is required in this barrel to give effective cleaning. The motor part is housed in a really basic designed casing with two rollers that rotate the barrel. I was very pleased with the end result of a piece that I polished soon after purchasing this machine. After nearly 3 weeks of tumbling, the stones are smooth but not as much as I expected. They are just ok.
