As it turns out, the battery was defective. I bought a new battery (approx. $30) to replace the one it came with . It then worked after all. However, I haven't tested the charging yet to make sure it's charging. The place where I bought the battery from said they sell chargers for the battery. However, they sold out. That will cost me another $17 if the built-in charging doesn't work. I did use it in cycling class and it worked fine. It took me awhile before I could figure out that a piece in the battery compartment has to be lifted out in order to insert the battery though, and I still cannot figure out how the shoulder strap attaches.
