They are not ceiling mounted and can not be shortened to the length I had hoped for. I was renovating an apartment and luckily needed lighting for other rooms which I used these for. I had originally thought they would be closer to the ceiling as it wasn't clear in the listing. These definitely hang down about a foot or so and you can not change that. If you are looking for ceiling mounts don't get these. If however, you want a chandelier type light this is a great one. It is not very large diameter wise, the glass covers are very handsome and though the site says you can not reorder replacements until October, I went ahead and ordered some assuming it would be good to have a back up and they came right away. Also good is they work perfectly for an angled ceiling which I have. All in all, very handsome if you want a hanging light. Great price.
