With the large I was hoping the fit would make it look a little less "pajama-ish" but it was much smaller than I expected from a size down -- seems more like 2 sizes down. Where the XL could fit a pillow, the L hugs the body which I did not want in this dress and it's MUCH shorter. The XL hits like a Midi (mid calf) and the L hits at my knees. I bought this dress because I'll be getting surgery in my knee so It's not form fitting but it still gives you a good shape so it's not boxy or anything like that. The dress does have pockets that are deep so they can fit your phone well even if it's a larger phone which is a plus for me. Personally I feel that it fits true to size so if your'e a medium then I'd recommend ordering that size.
