I'm so confused** A: Anyone that has done much canning usually has more metal rings than they know what to do with, so they don’t need to include metal rings with these lids. If you don’t have any metal rings they’re easy enough to find where most canning supplies are sold but you’ll almost always get a metal lid too, so most people don’t buy these reusable plastic lids until you have already used the metal lids your jars came with and you have the jar and the metal ring left to use again - either with these reusable plastic lids or another set of one time use metal lids. **Q: Are the rubber rings BPA free, or just the plastic lids? I am wanting to use these to ferment vegetables.** A: lids and rubber sealing rings are bpa free. they work very well when pressure canning or water bath canning. they should work well when fermenting, but just snug down on the lids. over tightening is the major cause of failure when using these lids and rings. **Q: I bought these because the other plastic lid option I tried, leaked. I am not pressure sealing anything. Recommendations on leak-proof plastic top?** A: they were intendedfor canning, but they will work as a regular sealing lid. lid needs to be fairly snug, but do not over tightenas it tends to deform gasket. also if jar seal edge and gasket are completely dry this may cause leakage. the gasket needs to slide on seal edge of jar so seal pressure. the only problems i have found is over tightening and dry on dry. one other thing is if it is not a canning style jar it may not seal, no matter what you do. **Q: Can Tattler canning lids be used in vaccum sealing of dried foods?** A: Yes, I have used them to seal dried foods. We used the lids to water bath can our first batch of homemade relish. We had no seal failures among 15 half-pint jars. Edit: After a year of use and an additional 20 or so water bath and steam bath sealed jars, we've had no seal failures.Pros:- Easy to use. Finger & thumb tighten the ring before it goes into the water bath. Fully tighten the ring when it comes out.- No BPA.- Infinitely reusable. We purchased a supply of replacement rubber rings up front which should make these last the rest of our lives.- No rusting, even in storage.- Can be stored with ring on or off.- Easy to tell if there is a seal failure: the lid will effortlessly lift upCons:- No satisfying "ping" upon sealing, if that's important to you in the canning process. You have to wait until the jar is cool before you can check the seal. (Only slightly different from metal lids, since you can't be *certain* that it's sealed until the jar is cool...even if the metal lid did ping during cooling).- Does take some time to recoup the cost. Need to use these about 4 times to match the cost of metal lids.Tip: when opening a sealed jar, use the non-serrated, smooth edge of a knife and pry underneath the *bottom* of the rubber ring. Now they are a reality and they are amazing.I have been in the pickle of trying to find lids when I thought I had more at the height of canning season before. My solution was to stock up on bulk purchases of the metal lids but I cringe at the ever increasing prices. After all, if being thrifty and healthy is the goal...one loses the thrift trying to buy lids at the height of the season.Also, the metal ones are not re-usable. Or at least they shouldn't be. I'm hearing more and more of people re-using them for dry canning after opening up something that had been wet canned. Not a big fan of that idea.Enter the Tattler. I just love these things. They really are just a plastic disk and a rubber ring, but the combination of the two gives you a reusable and refreshingly easy system for sealing up your home grown produce. I purchased from here last year so I've used these twice, but the ones I bought 2 years prior to that to try them out are on their 4th usage and doing fine.My only comment would be to ensure you have spare rings around. They are easy to use, seal great and the reuse-ability of them makes it worth the initial investment. I have canned all products with them, tomatoes, jellies, green beans, and I have only had one fail to seal. The other feature I like is that I can write on the white lid with a Sharpie. I don't like to use labels on my jars because they are so hard to remove, additionally, my storage area is such that it is easier to see the tops of the jars as opposed to the sides.
