That is how the built-in amplifier is powered. She says that they are loud enough, but that she can't control the volume from her remote. Some TVs (like my Vizio) have a setting in the menu that determines whether the TV volume switches also control the audio output. The TV we purchased this for doesn't have this feature; the output volume is constant. So, she has to get up and move the knob on the speakers to change the volume.
