I have Windows 8 which will not play a DVD without additional software. I believe the others who answered your question may have Windows 7, in which case "plug and play" may be correct. And here is what I did (for Windows 8) - I downloaded Cyberlink Power DVD player (software). It comes in several versions, the Deluxe works fine for what I wanted, but I'd suggest looking at their comparison before deciding. You can do a 30 free trial download. The trial will not allow you to later purchase the deluxe version, only ultra or pro I think. I did a trial on the deluxe, then had to uninstall it and go back to the Cyberlink website to buy and re-download the deluxe version. They make it easier if you want their pro or ultra versions. Cyberlink gets good reviews and I am happy with their software.
