I forgot it had this feature, but has a ring-like feature around the main center for rimshot accents, but it's by far the most pillow-like drum pad I've owned and have a feeling I'll be hours at this pad because it definitely feels nice in the hands and wrist due to the softness of it. I've never liked traditional rubber practice pads because for me, they don't relate the the kit well enough. Drum heads are nothing like a hard rubber practice pad. The 12" version fits nicely on top of my 14" snare. My two most important criteria in selecting this pad were high resistance (low bounciness) for building chops and low volume. There is some bounce as far as response, but much, much less than a traditional gum rubber pad. Great workout pad! Much lower volume than gum rubber. Rim is tough, won't mark up your sticks, and keeps your technique in check. Rimshots are loud though. Bottom side is a louder, harder surface for marching-type practice.
