Majority of the book deals with the history of the style while the remainder covers some VERY basic concepts. Most of the concept is foundational so while it's good to read them, I would highly recommend practicing them with an actual instructor because once you get a habit in the way you move, it's very hard to break it later. An incorrect understanding of some of the movements could prove disastrous in the future.The book also breaks down why a lot of the movements are unconventional relative to other eskrima styles. While the movements are unconventional, when you think about it, they're practically a no-brainer. Having said that, like many things in life, things are easier said than done and I must repeat that attending regular classes is important. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Une excellente addition à toute bibliothèque martiale *by G***N on Reviewed in France on 10 December 2017* Ma bibliothèque martiale s'étoffe avec une lente régularité, et notamment, ces dernières années, de tous les ouvrages que je peux trouver concernant les Arts Martiaux Philippins. La très grande majorité d'entre eux n'existent aujourd'hui qu'en anglais. Ils restent néanmoins très abordables pour un lecteur au niveau moyen dans cette langue, d'autant que les parties techniques offrent l'avantage d'un vocabulaire à la fois précis et répétitif. C'est le cas du livre d’Antonio Diego et Christopher Ricketts, dont la barrière de la langue, pour le lecteur plutôt francophone, ne devrait pas constituer un obstacle trop difficile. Car voilà un ouvrage qui mérite tout l'intérêt de ceux qui souhaitent découvrir, en surface ou en profondeur, les AMP.'L'art du Combat Philippin Explicité' nous dit le sous-titre, et plus précisément le Kalis Ilustrisimo, art familial de feu Grand Maître Antonio 'Tatang' Ilustrisimo, orienté principalement sur le travail de lame longue. Il s'agit ici presque d'une transmission de première main puisque les deux auteurs furent ses élèves directs, et tenaient la place d'instructeurs seniors dans son école.Comme souvent dans ce genre d'ouvrage, on retrouve une partie historique et documentaire, qui replace l'art concerné et les protagonistes (grand maître, auteurs…) dans le contexte très varié de l'Histoire, de la Culture et des Arts Martiaux Philippins. Cette partie est ici très équilibrée par rapport aux parties plus techniques (vous comprendrez implicitement que ce n'est pas toujours le cas), et apporte un éclairage pertinent sur le travail martial décrit dans la suite du livre.S'il n'a pas vocation à couvrir de manière exhaustive toutes les techniques du style Kalis Ilustrisimo (et quel ouvrage pourrait englober un style ou un art martial à lui seul ?), le livre permet d'en avoir néanmoins une bonne vision. Il est assez didactique pour capter le néophyte, notamment avec une bonne description des bases de la pratique. Mais aussi assez précis pour permettre à celui qui est plus avancé dans la connaissance des Arts Martiaux Philippins d'en comprendre, et d'en apprécier, les spécificités. C'est notamment pertinent dans le choix, pour le chapitre central intitulé 'Fundamental Fighting Techniques' (Techniques de Combat Fondamentales), de présenter chaque réponse proposée à une attaque sous trois approches différentes : d'abord au bâton simple (stick application), puis à la lame longue (sword application) et enfin à l'épée et dague (sword and dagger application). Cela illustre fort bien la polyvalence des techniques des AMP, tout en précisant les détails des variations à apporter quand le contexte change. On regrette juste que la qualité de reproduction des photographies manque parfois de faire rater ces subtilités, comme l'angle du poignet qui varie entre le travail de contre au bâton et celui avec une lame.Le dernier chapitre, très court, mérite que l'on s'y arrête. Car en quelques pages, comme une énumération de maximes ou de passages du Hagakure, ces 'Fighting Principles and Strategies' (Stratégies et Principes de Combat) donnent de précieuses indications sur les concepts fondamentaux à appliquer dans sa pratique du Kali Arnis Eskrima. Il finalise ainsi parfaitement le travail très bien construit des deux auteurs. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent book *by A***R on Reviewed in Germany on 29 July 2016* Some of the facts I already know, some of them in this book was new for me. This book provide a good history to early days of Ilustrisimo. I like the hierarchical structure with lineage of Ilustrisimo and as it is written. With the pictures involved I am not quite sure if they help me in practical way of fighting (its better to learn from someone), but at least I know some of the postures and the meanings.
