I shoes for a cruise and they were tight just above the toes. I put these in overnight. And no more tightness. My hiking boots have always been just a little bit tight. Used a on them, no more tightness. I have wide feet and they worked well for me. I am not sure how they will work for a smaller width. Once, inserted, you crank the handle to spread the end of the insert apart to do the stretching. There's an aluminum nut inside the shoes that is pulled backward to force the two halves apart in order to stretch your shoes. That nut was completely stripped on one of the stretchers. I'll bet it was stripped by a previous buyer, returned and then re-sold. The fact that the nuts were soft metal also probably means I would have stripped the other one eventually if I really put some tension on it.
