It is a 2-way radio, someone on the other end needs to be on the same channel as you. It works with persons in your group within a certain range. **Q: do they work with other radios?** A: Yes they use all the standard FRS channels **Q: Can you take handheld off and just use the radio?** A: No **Q: I bought 2 of these radios together and they were scratched when I got them not new looking so right away I texted you guys and heard nothing back and** A: Sometimes the paper instruction inserts slide around inside the box, there’s a plastic protective barrier on the screen of the radios. It and not the radio face can look scuffed but as some haven’t realized, the protective plastic comes off. There shouldn’t be any other scratching on the contents of the box.
