I love the inverse Edwardian snobbery of Guerlain issuing the scent to only two men: the French actor Jean-Claude Brialy and King Juan Carlos of Spain. That's it. Only those two. For reasons best known to themselves (and what a P.R. tease that was!) Guerlain deigned to release the scent for general sale and let mere mortals breathe its rarefied aroma of bottled elegance. Title aside, this is a scent that would suit any person who wants to try a quintessential Guerlain perfume. I've read that some think this is an old man's scent (and why by the way, is that a bad thing? Are we so ageist in our arrogance?) but I say, "What a fabulously-chic old man that would be!" I'm betting a poorly-stored bottle was to blame for the resulting funkiness. In MdM, my nose expands and smells an engrossing, oddly comforting mélange redolent of Hay, Ferns, Lavender and Amber, all undercut with a touch of Civet to anchor the top and middle notes. Rather like a Fin de Sicele 'Gypsy Water' by Byredo. That drop of civet is a nod to it's Kissing Cousin - Jicky. Honestly, do try it if you're hesitant. It's a glorious perfume and not at all exotic given it's history and provenance. Not many perfumes can be worn comfortably year round and this is one of them. It doesn't announce itself with trumpets but offers its tribute of muted sensuality to those who come close enough to you warrant it. I like wearing this scent when reading Trollope's Barchester Chronicles or the Palliser series. For Mr. Turin,' Mouchoir evokes Rupert Everett channeling Beau Brummell - for my part, it puts me in mind of Plantagenet Palliser with his simple yet impeccable manners and inherent noblesse. The one problem that bedevils me with MdM is how to travel with it. That thumping-great bottle is a nuisance to pack safely. I'm trying a gizmo from Sephora which promises to lever the amount you need OUT of the bottle and into the attached atomizer: don't even try to detach the collar from the bottle yourself! I've tried it and it was a waste on all fronts. I'll update this review if the new gadget works. So, there's my paean of praise for a scent close to my heart and a great perennial favourite. A masterpiece, really. A Fougere to dream about. I liken great perfumes to wonderful jewels. If Jicky is a Kashmir Sapphire and Shalimar a Golconda Diamond of the First Water, it seems to me that Mouchoir de Monsieur is a rare and beautiful Pigeon's Blood Ruby.
