I have had the tip of my soldering iron on the surface for several second and no scorch marks appeared. It is pretty well heat resistant. This is probably your best bet. If you used MDM board, which is really compressed bits of wood/sawdust, you may see scorching. The one thing to note, whatever board you use, they are really meant to be disposable and none will last forever. Hope that helps a bit, sorry I can't be definitive, because I don't use torches. **Q: Some reviews claim this is waterproof, good for stretching watercolor paper, and others say it absorbs water. Which is it?** A: This surface is relatively thin, and I suspect absorbent. It might work if you are not saturating the surface. But from my experience with watercolor, I think you would be better off buying a piece of masonite at your local hardware store... usually you can get them cut to your size specifications. The masonite will be sturdier for stretching, and more waterproof. Hope that helps! The biggest problem I have is the pins are hard to push in while holding my glass pieces in place. Good thing, once you have the pins in, pieces stay in place. **Q: Is this made of Homasote?** A: It seems to be insulation material and I use it when doing stained glass.
