However, it was useless as it would not shake down once up. **Q: I can't get this to shake down as someone else has commented. Anyone know a trick to get it to shake down?** A: I taped mine (in its case) to a two foot piece of automotive electrical wire and whirled it round and round for about a minute...seemed to work. Tape it good, of course, so it doesn't fly off! **Q: What is the liquid if not mercury ?** A: I don't know what the liquid is, but don't buy it because you can't shake it down. It falls out of the mouth unless not inserted deeply. It is supposed to register the temperature after 3 minutes. After 10 minutes it only goes up to 97 degrees (F). It's necessary to hold it in mouth the whole time. Not like the classic thermometers that insert easily, work fast and produce accurate results. Obtained credit from amazon. Nothing compares with the original mercury thermometers. This is modeled after it but a poor and non-functional substitute.
