It feels good and is fine under paper when writing, and as a mouse pad.The most disappointing thing though is that one side is a VERY shiny silvery color. Way too shiny to be of any use, which is too bad as the color of that side would be preferable. Am happy with that. I was worried the ugly yellow underside would show through along the edges enough to make me regret it, but it doesn't. Smell was never an issue for me. And the folded edges flatten out just fine, pretty quickly. My beef is with how easily it slides. I have a keyboard, mouse, mousepad, and several other small items on it, and it's still not enough weight to stop it. I thought someone had suggested a solution for this by buying something at Michael's, but I couldn't find that review again. Anyway, I wanted the color enough that the "cons" wouldn't prevent me from buying it again.
