## Description

The X-Series earmuffs are 3M’s latest advancement in hearing conservation. New technologies in comfort, design and protection all come together in this groundbreaking earmuff line. The X4A earmuffs offer a NRR (27 dB) which makes them ideal for moderate to high noise situations. The X4A utilizes a newly designed spacer, specially formulated foam liners and innovative ear cushions to help improve attenuation. It features an electrically insulated wire headband, often referred to as “dielectric”. When correctly selected and worn, these products help reduce exposure to hazardous levels of noise. 3M PELTOR HYX4 Hygiene Kit offer replaceable ear cushions and foam liners to help keep your earmuffs clean and extend the service life. The 3M PELTOR X Series earmuffs are ideal for protection against noise arising from a wide range of applications in the workplace. Examples of typical applications include: metal processing, automotive, airports, construction, textile manufacturing, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, cement manufacturing, printing, woodworking, heavy engineering, foundry, steelworks, and mining and quarrying. Also available in hard hat attachment model: 3M PELTOR XSeries CapMount Ear Muffs X4P3E. NOTE: The X-Series (over-the-head) headband version is electrically insulated -sometimes referred to as “dielectric”. The metal components of the headband have been covered by non-conductive material for use in a low voltage electrical hazard (less than 440 V ac). As there are no applicable standards for testing ear muffs against electrical insulating properties, the product has been evaluated at an external laboratory against a modified test method based on EN397: 1995. During assessment, the leakage current did not exceed 1. 2mA when the external surface of the product made contact with an electrical source. The user must determine the overall suitability of this product for the intended application taking into account all relevant hazards. Disclaimer: 3M industrial and occupational products are intended, labeled, and packaged for sale to trained industrial and occupational customers for workplace use.

Review: Awesome performance- better than active noise canceling earbuds!!! - I was looking for a product that can help me focus better while working on my computer or reading books, articles, etc. at my home. The key application was usage inside my house. I was a bit apprehensive while ordering this model because the users rating for this model- X4A was only about 3.5 stars and there were only around 10 ratings, while some other models from 3M have more than 100 ratings, with average rating of 4.4 stars!!! However, I am pleasantly surprised after brief usage, after receiving it. Quick feedback: I got it just today evening and the first impression is that its performance is awesome!! It feels as if 90% of sound is blocked and it's better than what my active noise canceling solutions provide. It's weight appears tolerable to me; it's subjective thing but I am still mentioning this as I moved from ear buds. I got it for ~ Rs3300 and I feel that it's good value for money at this price. I am wondering as to why other users have given it such a low rating! My prior experience with noise canceling earphones: I used Bose QuietComfort 20 (wired earphones with active noise cancellation) for several years. Then I upgraded to a newer model- Bose QuietControl 30 (Bluetooth wireless), and have been using it for several years now. Last year, I got ear infection repeatedly in quick successions (within a week or two weeks) and doctor suggested to avoid earphones! So, I thought to search for some alternative solution, not involving ear buds. I was deliberating whether to go for active noise canceling headphones or something else. Then I found these ear muffs. I spent several hours to find the right brand, right model while I had flexible budget. I was looking for the most suitable solution. So, why did I choose model X4A over X3 or X5? X4A is sleeker than the other two models. X3 provides similar noise reduction and is cheaper by Rs1000 but it appears 'bulkier'. X5 specs are better than that of X4A for noise reduction, but: 1. X5 also appears bulkier than X4A, 2. X5 is about 100 g heavier than X4A. 3. I also suspected that grip of X5 over the head would be tighter which may make it difficult to use continuously for hours everyday. 4. X5 is costlier by about Rs 2000, though this was not the decision making criterion here. Potential key negative aspect of the product: It feels pretty tight on area around ears, after few hours of continuous use. I am not sure whether it would still be tolerable after few days of continuous use. I will update my feedback if it turns out to be too difficult to use on a daily basis, for several hours each day. Special Note on Combo of Active and Passive noise suppression: I was able to use my Bose wireless ear buds below these ear muffs without any difficulty! This provides even better isolation and also the ability to watch audio-visual content. Update on 22nd June, 21: Feedback after two and half weeks of use: 1. It has become much more easy to use- the sensation on and around the ears due to the pressure of pads has reduced significantly. 2. Isolation is very good. Floor cleaning robot is barely audible with these earmuffs on. 3. Picking up my pulse: I noticed that there was a repetitive sound. After a while I realised that it was my own pulse! The ear cups must be pressing against some artery around my ear and picking my pulse which I was able to hear due to absence of noise! 4. Tip to reduce uneasiness around ears: Push the earlobes inside the rim of ear cups with your finger, this allows you to move the cups slightly up. This creates more space for the upper parts of the ears which now may not be in direct contact of the cups. This significantly reduces the sensation of unease caused by long and continuous use of earmuffs. 5. Caution/safety concern: Be aware that you may miss listening to your family member who is shouting for help in an emergency situation in another part of your house! Suggestions: 1. Make some alternate arrangement to be able to draw the attention of the wearer of these earmuffs, like some strong electronic buzzer which can be triggered by using a remote control. 2. Keeping your mobile phone in your visual range may help, so that you don't miss an incoming call in an emergency.
Review: I decided to try out the X5A model as it boasts of an noise reduction rating that is best in the market - 3M Peltor a name one can always trust in the ear muff category. I had been using a 3M optime 101 over head earmuffs (/ green) for nearly 4 years onboard ships . Finally after years of harsh use the metal part gave away and I had to look for a replacement . I decided to try out the X5A model as it boasts of an noise reduction rating that is best in the market , 31 dbs , plus I trust Peltor to know their stuff . I was quite happy to find it on desertcart India and decided to buy from here instead of desertcart.com as it was almost the same price with the duty etc included ( It is made outside India ) . It was delivered before the scheduled date and I was a bit surprised by the size , it was a bit larger than I expected . ( If you would like a more compact model X4A would be an excellent choice and good for most applications ). When I first wore it blew me away with the amount of noise it had cut off . I could hardly hear most of the noise and what ever I could it had been reduced dramatically . It would sound ridiculous but this X5A is almost comparable to a Bose QC35 performance . I am very impressed by its performance , yet to try it out in my work place though . This is worth every penny for students, or people living in noisy environments who cannot concentrate due to the high noise level around them . It is a bit expensive no doubts but it gives a performance that somewhat compares ( somewhat ) to an active noise cancelling head set which is worth 30 k at one tenth the price ! If you want good noise isolation without spending too much money this is it . Only thing to remember is this is not very small , it does look a bit large though not very heavy , it is quite comfortable to wear and feels snug. I have not worn it for long period so can not comment on that yet , but with my previous experiences with Peltor I know this will do its job .

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Would these be suitable to wear for sleeping in a noisy college environment? Are they comfortable enough or is it kind of overkill?**
A: That depends on how noisy the environment is and how badly you need noise-reduction. To the nay sayers: I've been sleeping with hearing protectors of various types, including EAR, 3M Peltor (98, 105, and soon these) for years > 35 years. The problem (not "issue", "PROBLEM")--regardless of sleeping on one's side or back--is that eventually the ear-muffs become uncomfortable. Depending on how tired on is, and how much localized discomfort one can ignore for how long, one can sleep with earmuffs on, sleeping either on either side or on one's back. However, sleeping on either side, using the muffs as a "pillow" will increase the pressure of the cushions on one's head and thus the discomfort and shorten the amount of time it takes for the localized discomfort to awaken one. One can take two small pillows place them together forming a partial triangle, and still support most of one's head with those pillows, instead of the ear-muffs. One can buy an U-shaped neck-supporter and do the same. One take a firm foam pillow and cut a hole in it the size of the ear-muffs. It all really depends . . . . . . (like I said above). One can also--and I've done this for years--use foam earplugs under an ear-muff. One can--if one is very, very careful--use wax earplugs on top of foam earplugs; however, the risk of jamming the foam too far into the ear and causing damage or an infection is increased drastically. One can--I have been doing this for years--is to use all three: foam earplugs, carefully covered with wax earplugs, then a set of earmuffs on top. I also use a set of passive-noise-reducing in-ear earphones (commonly called "buds", regularly used with other equipment as IEMs, In Ear Monitors), along with earmuffs, when I want to play acoustic drums (very loud in a small, highly reverberant room) and sing along with recorded accompaniment. I also do this when I want to play (and sometimes sing) with bass guitar (using a mixer's headphone output rather than an amp), when I play (and often sing along with) my ukulele, etc. Sometimes I do this to get a better indication of how the actual electric or acoustic-electric instrument sounds non-acoustically (in preparation for recording, for pleasure, etc.). Mostly, I do it to keep my noise-level down, for my benefit and for my 87-year old landlord/mother's benefit. All these previous remedies utilize passive noise-reduction. However, one can also use ACTIVE noise-canceling earplugs or headphones (earplugs work best). For example, when I drum and want to sing along with pre-recorded tracks, I sometimes use a set of active noise-reducing ear "buds". Years ago--until I broke the cable which my increasingly sluggish fingers don't like fixing with a soldering iron--I used active noise-reducing headphones. They were very interesting as they don't reduce lower frequencies as well as they reduce higher frequencie (also a characteristic of passive attenuators): I could hear car engines start up from the stop-sign about 15-18 meters from my bedroom, then, when the engine RMPs got high enough, the noise would be reduced by about 25 dB and the cars very instantly got much quieter. So much in fact, that I got used to having noisy cars (or trucks, or motorcycles) wake me up when going away from the stop sign, but, then fall back asleep almost instantly when the active headphones noise-reduction circuits took over. Finally, one can do the following by itself or in conjunction with the other methods, if circumstances allow. Play pink noise through speakers. Or, using a CD/MP3 player with surf noises playing. The relatively constant noise does add to the total noise, but, since it is relatively constant, it effectively reduces the peaks in the other noises making them less noticeable. Be advised, however, that this still increases your daily noise-exposure, meaning your ears will wear out faster, which is why I no longer use this technique. Also, when using foam plugs, one must be aware of whether they're made of PVC or latex foams as some of us--myself included--are allergic to latex and will suffer in one manner or another whenever we use the wrong type of foam. Finally, whenever one uses foam earplugs (wax plugs should never be inserted into the ear canal), one's ear will react to the foam as foreign-matter and produce more wax. This is also true for flanged earphones, flanged passive or active noise-reducing earplugs, essentially for anything you stick in you ear for more than a few seconds. Thus, you will have to clean your ears out more often. But, that's another "story".:D

**Q: Will these block out the shrill screaming of little children playing beneath my 3rd floor window?**
A: No, it will only dampen noise. The higher the pitch, the more difficult it is to block out all frequencies. But reducing the sound may be good enough for you. If you want full coverage, you will have to try ear plugs.

**Q: How adjustable are these earmuffs? I have a fairly large head and usually need to make average headphones as big as they can get. Will these fit me?**
A: The ear pieces are adjustable (you can make them higher or lower, but the plastic band that fits around the head is not adjustable. I am a woman with a small head and these earmuffs are too tight for me. It feels like too much pressure on my head. I don't understand how men with larger heads can find them comforable. They are too tight for me to wear.

**Q: Will these fit comfortably on a person with a very large (7-5/8) sized head?**
A: They are awesome. I am 6 foot tall 200 lbs and they should fit your head. I bought them to use indoors with lots of noise and they work and are super comfortable
