Changing the PL tones to different values with the software can allow you to customize your walkies to avoid hearing others who may be operating on the channel. Very handy feature. Also please keep in mind FRS channels are no license required but they are low power (2 watts max). To use the higher 4 watt GMRS channels, you will need a GMRS license from the FCC. About $70 for 10 years and covers your entire family. FRS and GMRS rules are covered and explained in the FCC document titled “Part 95” which can be seen on the internet. Also much information is a available on MyGMRS dat cam. **Q: do these have vox capability?** A: Yes, they have. It's disabled by default, you could follow the steps below to activate it: 1. Turn off the radio. 2. Turn the channel knob to 1~5 (for each level of VOX selected) 3. Hold the PTT and upper Side button together and turn on the radio. 4. Once you hear the voice prompt says "VOX ON", the VOX is activated. **Q: Can you leave these Ansoko walkie talkies "on" all the time in the charging base?** A: You can leave them on all the time in the charging base, however; you will make the battery dependent on the charging base and it will run down faster outside of the base and eventually will have to be replaced. I have found that it is best to have an extra base, battery, and antenna if you absolutely cannot be without the radio. I have bought over 12 of these to be used on a daily basis and in 3 years I have only had to replace one battery and one base. The rest are still going strong. If you fully charge them, you can use them throughout the week without putting them on the charging base. This is on true if you turn them off each day (an 8hr work day). I usually put them on the charging base on Fridays. I still haven’t checked to see how far apart they can be and still pick up great, but we were separated by over 200 yards and still getting clear reception. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well-suited to an interstate car trip *by A***H on May 23, 2019* We purchased these for a move from southern Wisconsin to northern Minnesota. We had two personal vehicles and a U-Haul. We wanted 2-way radios to make coordination among the three vehicles easier than trying to call everyone on cellphones, and cell reception would be weak on part of our trip. Whether was clear and the drive mostly flat with some rolling hills on a few stretches. Under these conditions, the radios did just fine. At 65-70 mph voices were clear and crisp as long as you stayed within around 2 miles of each other. Pushing beyond that distance introduced a little bit of crackle but that's perfectly reasonable given the radios' specifications, and you could still understand the person. The radios are easy to use. You can easily pick them up and operate one-handed, and set back down, without lOoking at them. You can set the volume plenty loud. Having them a couple feet from the driver in the noisy cab of the U-Haul was no problem in terms of hearing the radio. Also, the radio provides spoken feedback for almost everything you do, though you can shut this off, and all buttons are big, textured, and easy to feel and operate. This again, is good for driving if you need to switch channels or anything like that. It also means that someone who is blind, like me, can setup and operate these with no problem. The only very minor thing is that the radios need to sit somewhat firmly, and in just the right way, into the charging bases. You have to pay slightly more attention than just plopping them in, but we're talking an extra 2 seconds.
