### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ MacBeth meets Kurosawa

Kurosawa pinches from Shakespeare and comes up with a masterpiece. It is not his finest work (see Seven Samurai, Ran, High and Low, etc.) but it is really good. The image quality in the Criterion Bluray is excellent, and there is a nice accompanying booklet and a documentary from It's Wonderful to Create. I didn't buy it for the extras.Every Kurosawa film is worth seeing, but if you're new to Kurosawa, this is not a bad place to start.

ここのレビュー欄を見て、CRITERION版Blu-ray（東宝版ではなく）を購入してみました。確かに映像は格別にきれいです。もっとも、役者の声は相変わらず聴きとりづらいのですが、これはどうしようもないのでしょう。映画自体は、黒澤明の全作品の中でもトップクラスの完成度だと思います。晩年に作られた「乱」と似た内容ではあるものの、「乱」よりもずっと見ごたえがある。なぜこんなにも面白いのか。シェイクスピアの原作が持つ力も大きいのでしょうが、黒澤明作品にしては珍しい、映画全編を包むホラーテイスト。恐怖といえばクライマックスの弓矢のシーンがまず有名ですが、より背筋が寒くなるのは主人公の妻・浅茅を演じた山田五十鈴の芝居。見事です。「乱」では、原田美枝子が同じような悪女・楓の方を演じましたが、あちらは凶行に及ぶだけの動機があった。浅茅にそれはなく、夫婦して狂気に憑かれたとしか言いようがない。この映画には、妖怪や亡霊も登場しますが、何よりも浅茅の存在が不気味です。本作は時代劇ですが、「七人の侍」「隠し砦の三悪人」のようなスペクタクル巨編を期待したらがっかりするかもしれません。そうだな……　黒澤流の「シャイニング」だと思って鑑賞すれば、期待を裏切られることはないでしょう。

Great actors and story is riveting. If u like Japanese history and culture it fills all the boxes. Particularly excellent reenactment of a battle between opposing forces and the bloody times in Japan.
