I thought it a clever approach to a pretty common speech obstacle-that of pronouncing the "R" sound. When I first stumbled upon this book, the title made me laugh, and the favorable reviews of this book convinced me it was well worth giving it a try.I like the approach this book takes. I have a 7 year old that has a hard time with some of the range that the "R" sound has. We have worked off and on with him on this with some degree of success. He has been able to say "R" with better regularity when it is at the beginning of words rather then in the middle or end, but getting him to correctly say the pirate "ARRRRRRR" has not been a project he has met with success. That was until last night when he read this book to me. Now it is a matter of making new habits with his tongue and generating that muscle memory. He has to make an effort, but I have seen/heard improvement with his "ARRRRRRRR" sound. It was amazing to hear it pronounced correctly for the first time and since a few times more. I remind him that as the book states pirate red leg Lamar had to work hard and the easy steps of "mouth open wide......tongue back and inside" really seem to help. As I mentioned, he has had success on a couple of occasions the trick now is keeping at it and lots of practice making the correct sound the habit and in so doing pronouncing with consistency. This does not happen overnight, but I am impressed with his improvement so far. Last night was a kind of "breakthrough".I would recommend this book to anyone struggling with the "R" pronunciation. It also helps (I felt) that the author knows first hand of the struggles on this issue being that she herself dealt with this issue and has therefore "talked a mile those shoes" so to speak. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The kids love 'Red Legs Lamar'! *by B***E on January 20, 2014* This book is not only simple to read and short, but also fun and engaging. My students love 'Red Legs Lamar' because they can identify themselves with him. When they hear about him struggling to say his 'Arrrrrr' and going to another pirate to seek help my students are attentive and on the edge of their seats. It has truly helped my students struggling with their Rs. I give it five stars! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Black and White *by P*** on July 3, 2016* I actually love this book and ordered a second copy to loan out and was very disappointed that it was in black and white. My children were also commenting that it wasn't in color and not liking the black and white version. I will order more of this book, but only if I can get it in color. I would have added a photo but the book is at my office.
