I took up the Irish whistle 4 weeks ago and started with the basic brass type which was inexpensive and squawky in sound and it was unbearable for those listening. I kept at it and bought a Clarke Sweetone D whistle and the difference in tone was instantaneous. It's softer in sound and when you go to the next octave it behaves better than the brass whistle I started out with. I learned a few Irish and Scottish tunes and and people were now saying how much better I sounded. This improved my confidence and after seeing a video on YouTube about this Original Clarke Irish Whistle, I thought I'd purchase one. And am I glad I did. I'm now up in the higher octave and getting the notes right. It is a quieter whistle than the Clarke D but that's part of its charm. I switch between whistles for different volumes and tone. And, I even now find myself playing the brass whistle again now that I have improved my fingering and seem to have gained more control overall. Make this your first whistle and fly.....!!! Review: lovely but no good for dry lips - This is a nice quality tin whistle which seems to produce a good sound, although, I’m a beginner so I may be wrong! It’s quite easy to get some good notes from the whistle and it comes with a sheet to help with finger placement, although I found instructions on the internet easier to understand. I also like that there is no plastic in the packaging. The only thing I don’t like about this whistle is that the mouth piece is part wood which dries out my lips. Quite frankly, I'm astounded that you can get a whistle of this quality for Β£12. It has a very nice, breathy tone which isn't as 'sharp' sounding as whistles with a plastic mouthpiece, but that comes down to personal preference as the sound/tone you're looking for. There is a slight ridge down the back of the whistle, but I didn't find it distracting or uncomfortable. The only negative is that this whistle isn't tuneable, and while the one I bought was spot on, 'fixed' whistles, especially cheaper ones, can be a touch flat or sharp...but for a practice whistle or for situations where you're not playing with a band or backing track, it's not going to be an issue. Long story short, great whistle, great price, would highly recommend.
