For each variety there's a beautiful full-color illustration of the butterfly on one page and on the page opposite it includes the butterfly's common name, scientific name, wingspan, habitat, distribution (where it's found around the world), lifespan, and what the males and females of that variety look like. It also includes a short paragraph about that variety which includes information like how rare or common it may be, what it eats, when it can be seen, and even notes folklore about that kind of butterfly. It's a small book (about a 5-6" square), but it's packed with great information. I like that it has a combination of easy-to-scan facts as well as the paragraphs you can really dive into. I think it'll be a great source of information and inspiration without being overwhelming to the kids. Even I got sucked in right away and read about several of the varieties. I can't say I've ever been wildly into butterflies, but reading about them has been fascinating! This is a great book visually and educationally. The back also has a checklist "spotters guide" with the names and smaller pictures of each butterfly so you could scan them easily if you were trying to identify one you'd spotted. Initially I was looking for an age appropriate butterfly book for my toddler son (2.5 yo) and didn't quite find anything I liked. I wanted him to see a variety of butterflies as he loves them. My son loves this book and to our surprise has slowly memorized the name of every butterfly in this book. The pictures and descriptions of the butterflies are great and the book is sturdy enough for abuse from a toddler.
