Everyone should see this at least once *by S***5 on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 March 2016* I'm ashamed to say that aged 50, I had never seen this film. My husband was horrified to hear this but wasn't willing to pay for a film that would 'no doubt be shown on terrestrial TV at some point'. Six months later, I'd had enough and bought it. I'm so glad I did. We watched it today on a gloomy Sunday afternoon. At the start, I wasn't sure that I wanted to continue watching mentally ill people suffering in a horrid institution run by the obiouvsly evil Nurse Ratchett but stuck with it. I've always loved Jack Nicholson but must say that this is by far his best acting achievement, in my opinion. In fact the whole cast were excellent and neither myself nor my husband even realised that 'Martini' was played by Danny Devito!After my initial hesitation, I was glued to the screen by the storyline, the characters, the highs and lows and the unlikely human relationships that developed.A brilliant film, sometimes very funny, sometimes extremely sad but most of all poignant and I'm still thinking about it 4 hours later. I certainly will be watching it again and recommending it to others have come late to seeing it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ For people who don’t know, mental health patients are STILL treated poorly today. *by A***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2021* When I was in med school, some medics were watching this movie together, but I didn’t want to because I thought that I wouldn’t like an old movie.But, I decided to watch it today, and I relate to what the patients were going through because I got sectioned several times myself. Although the patients on my wards weren’t as wild as these patients, we did get punished a lot if we were not submissive to the nurses. The head nurse being icy cold is VERY realistic.It is a shame that some people might think that mental health patients being punished all the time was fiction. Although my doctors didn’t take out a piece of my brain!!!, they did do quite a lot of bad things, because they want you to always be quiet and submissive...NEVER aggressive.It is scary how this movie and my experience shows that things have not changed much.BUT... more about the movie...the movie was spectacular! The whole way through you will be giggling at the patients’ antics! Boy I wish I was in a ward with patients who constantly broke the rules like that! We would have had so much fun! But...the movie DOES show that breaking the rules, especially in a mental health hospital is THE WORST thing to do, because the staff don’t tell you, but they keep punishing you until you figure out that they want you to be a submissive ‘model’ patient.The ending is a bit sad, but very meaningful.Don’t let the fact that this is an old movie put you off! It’s REALLY good. Go watch it :) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the all time greats *by P***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 August 2019* This film was recommended to me by my dad and it did not disappoint. In my opinion it’s one of the best films Jack Nicholson has made and he has made a lot of great films. It’s quality did not go unnoticed as it was only the 2nd film to win the major 5 oscars (best picture, actor in a lead role, actress in a lead role, director and screenplay). The 1st time was in 1934 and it was not achieved again until 1991 by silence of the lambs. It has a great support cast too with Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd making their film debuts. Another big name linked to the film is Michael Douglas who produced the film.
