To operate it you have to be an FCC licensed operator with at least a Technician license (HAM). You can listen unlicensed but will likely have a van bristling with antennas show up if you use it illegally. It operates on 2 meter & 70 cm bands. Look around for videos or second-party instructions on programming. There are 2 guides included and you need the not very easy to use procedures in both to tune the radio and to store settings to channels. It's a good radio. **Q: Is this radio water resistant** A: Short answer: Yes. Long answer: it's splashproof, but not submersible. I would be willing to use it in the light rain, but not out in full adventure on a boat or something. If you need higher water resistance, consider the VX-6, which I have. It's more expensive, but full IP67 submersible. **Q: With the supplied antenna and using it in suburbia (trees, houses, flat topography) what range can I expect on 5W transmit?** A: On the second story you can expect to hit at least 6 miles, with a cheap Ed-Fong antenna I have hit over 90 miles with this radio ## Frequently Bought Together - Yaesu Original FT-65 FT-65R 144/440 Dual-Band Rugged & Compact Handheld Transceiver, 5W - 3 Year Warranty - Yaesu SSM-17B Compact Speaker Microphone for FT-65, FT-25, and FT-4X/V - Authentic Genuine Nagoya NA-771 15.6-Inch Whip VHF/UHF (144/430Mhz) Antenna SMA-Female for BTECH and BaoFeng Radios --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.tn/products/97564670-yaesu-genuine-ft-65-ft-65r-144-440-dual-band](https://www.desertcart.tn/products/97564670-yaesu-genuine-ft-65-ft-65r-144-440-dual-band) --- *Product available on Desertcart Tunisia* *Store origin: TN* *Last updated: 2026-10-16*
