They are good, well made bowls that can sit in a hot oven for an extended period while French onion soup is made. The lip helps to hold the cheese, which makes a seal and minimizes spilling. I saw a negative comment about the bottoms being rough. Yes, that is true. No glaze is applied, or can be applied, where the bowls touch the kiln. So there is a rim on the bottom that is unglazed clay. It doesn't effect the bowls appearance nor their function.The manufacturer did a nice job packing them. I wish I could have said the same for Amazon when they were shipped. Fortunately, they all arrived intact. The crocks seem just fine, no problem under the broiler and the size is right for one bowl of soup or chili.
