For conducting Mahler, Marriner just isn't your guy. All the dignity and heaviness of Mahler evaporates in Marriner's dance-like approach. Even the sound engineering by Bernhard Bauer on that disc contributed to an overall impression of dullness. Luckily, he's not the recording engineer on all the discs (just that one and the Bartok one).The Schumann discs are surprisingly good. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ De belles versions de complément *by C***E on Reviewed in France on June 6, 2018* Excellente affaire que ce coffret. L'orchestre de Stuttgart est excellent et Marriner dirige un répertoire qu'il connaît bien mais que la postérité a occulté. Il dirige cet orchestre entre Celidibidache et Norrington ce qui finalement en fixe bien l'horizon stylistique. Direction vive, avec beaucoup de noblesse, qui ne va pas vers les extrêmes et se montre très attentive à la dynamique, aux équilibres et surtout à la clarté des lignes. Si vous aimez les contrechants, ce coffret est fait pour vous !Le meilleur : 2 disques Beethoven avec des ouvertures et des pièces de circonstances. Excellente consécration de la maison par exemple. Un Beethoven très haydnien et apollinien mais cela va bien avec ce répertoire.Magnifique intégrale Schumann (mais très schubertienne... ) avec cerise sur le gâteau la symphonie Zwickau (inachevée). Son charnu, coloré, léger.Réussite totale également dans les suites de Tchaïkovski qui correspondent parfaitement à la direction de Marriner.Bonne surprise : les Strauss qui s'éclaircissent d'un son transparent. Excellent réussite dans Till l'Espiègle. De même une 2ème de Rachmaninov sans pathos, avec beaucoup d'allant et de rebonds. Pas du tout idiomatique mais quelle plaisir de l'écouter ainsi jouée !Bartok, Britten et Honnegger sont de bonnes factures mais un chouïa décoratif. La beauté des couleurs l'emporte sur l'urgence du discoursTrès belle 4ème de Mahler qui là aussi va bien avec le chef mais ternie par une soprano qui n'a pas la carrure (M. Shiraï, plus connue comme mélodiste).Plutôt raté, les Gerschwin et la musique américaine où le chef est trop gourmé, trop noble. Excellent prestation de Cécile Ousset dans le concerto.
