The large 7-man vocal/instrumental group alternately known as Los Pop Tops or The Pop-Tops, formed up in 1967 in Madrid, Spain, bringing together Ignacio Pérez, Enrique Gómez, Ray Gómez, José Lipiani, Julián Luis Angulo, Alberto Vega and transplanted U.S. resident (born Jan 5, 1940 in Trinidad & Tobago) and lead vocalist Phil Trim, whose overall sound puts one in mind of Procul Harum. While hugely popular throughout continental Europe as well as the U.K. and Japan, their commercial success in North America was modest to say the least, but of course they never did have an album released on this side of the pond and, as far as I can determine, just two singles, both of which made the mid- to lower-regions of the Billboard Pop Hot 100, although one in 1968 did do a bit better on the R&B listings and the other, in 1971, quite well on the Adult Contemporary (Easy Listening) charts. Something else working against them here is that they never appear to have performed in North America.Their first charted entry in the U.S. as Los Pop Tops was the Sept-Oct 1968 # 35 R&B and # 78 Hot 100 Oh Lord, Why Lord?, co-penned by Trim which came out on the New York City-based Calla Records b/w The Voice Of The Dying Man (Calla 154). If the charting side sounds familiar to classical music fans that’s because the melody incorporates Pachelbel's Canon in D Major, while others whose love of such music includes Johann Sebastian Bach will recognize his composition in the B-side.Three years later they returned to the U.S. charts with Hubert Giraud’s poignant Mamy Blue (English lyrics by Trim), a huge 1971 hit in Europe which, on its U.S. release as ABC 11311 and billed simply as The Pop-Tops, made it to # 57 Hot 100 in Oct-Nov 1971, but went as high as # 28 Adult Contemporary b/w Road to Freedom.In presenting all 4 U.S. sides, making it ideal for completist hits collectors, this 2008 17-track CD from Magic Records of France reformats their 1971 LP “Mamy Blue,” released in Spain as Explosión 85.400-L (tracks 1 to 10), with the addition of 7 “bonus” tracks encompassing some other sides popular in parts of Europe and that B-side to Oh Lord, Why Lord? The sound quality is excellent.In late 1973, the NY City-based quartet The Stories would take their cover of Mamy Blue to # 50 Hot 100 for Kama Sutra Records.
