This is curved to work under the bark and peel AROUND the trunk, not long ways. A draw knife is a better tool for working long ways on thinner bark. Still, it works OK long ways to get a cut started if the curve is pointed down towards the bark, NOT up like a ski. Since logs are round and tend to want to roll, having the log steadied and waist height in a "V" notch post will help make this tool work most effectively.
