If you are a technophobe, or long-review hater, please don't read this.Review of the LiitoKala Lii-402 Smart Universal Battery Charger: As specified, this charger can be used with Ni-Cad, Ni-MH & Li-Ion cells in a range of sizes. It has four charging current options between 500 mA and 2000 mA. It does not include a power supply and is intended for use with a USB supply with a 2 amp output current rating. However, it can be used with a 1 amp power supply but will be limited to charging cells at 500 mA only.I tested the Lii-402 with 2500 mAH AA Ni-MH cells only, using a 2.1 amp rated USB (AC) power supply. For input current measurements I used a metered 5.10 volt regulated lab power supply with a 4 amp output current capability.When charging 4 AA cells at the 500 mA each, the input current was 1120 mA.When charging 2 AA cells at 700 mA each, the input current was 770 mA.When charging 2 AA cells at 1000 mA each, the current was 1220 mA.I did not test at the 2000 mA setting to avoid damaging my AA cells.Charging efficiency (power out in watts/power in in watts) varied from 47 to 53 percent.This charger ueas constant current regulation with a pre-set voltage limit cut off. This is a reasonable way to control charging of Ni-Cad and Ni-MH cells but is not ideal for charging Li-Ion cells. Those are best charged using negative delta voltage detection (NVD) chargers.I also tested this charger with 10,000 mAH and 21,000 maH capacity smart USB portable power banks, having respective 2.1 amp and 4.0 amp current ratings Portable power storage devices (Power Banks). These portable power storage dvices typically use current sensing detectors to completely shut off when the connected (load) device current drain drops at the end of a charge cycle. Even when charging completely discharged cells, the Lii-402 does not draw current constantly. It periodically stops drawing current every few seconds. That current interruption causes the portable power bank to shut off. It's unfortunate that the Lii-402 is not usable with a power bank because my intended use was to be able to recharge AA cells in the field where no AC power is available. I'm keeping this charger and will modify it so that a "keep-alive" current will prevent the portable power bank from turning off, but it is a shame that the unmodified unit can't work with a power bank current source.Someone not familiar with modern power supply and battery charger technology might think the above review contains errors because in most cases the sum of the output charging current is higher than the input current from the USB supply. Please be assured that the numbers are correct. This charger uses an individual toroidal inductor, high-frequency DC to DC buck-converter to charge each cell. The buck-converters are capable of providing a lower output voltage and a higher output current than the available input current. That's how a 5 volt 1120 mA input can provide a 1.45 volt 2000mA output (4 cells each drawing 500mA).I've seen reviews stating this , and similar chargers would need 4-amp USB power supplies to charge 4 cells at 1-amp each.
