Quality brand-name product
My old MOEN shower valve started to become very difficult to turn off. We have hard water, so I suspect calcium buildup. I suspect that if I didn't replace it, it would either begin to leak or stop working altogether. I was concerned about ordering a replacement because I read all the reviews of people buying aftermarket replacements that didn't fit or started leaking soon after installation. So I was looking for a brand name replacement. This one was a little more expensive than the no-name aftermarket parts, but worth it.Removal of the old one was quite difficult. It seemed stuck in place. You have to spin the old valve 45 degrees to remove it. I was glad ai also purchased the removal tool. I had to use channel lock pliers to twist it back and forth when removing to get it to come out of the valve body. When I took the old one out, the rubber crumbled. It appears it had hardened from years of use and I think it was difficult to remove because the rubber gasket was stuck inside the channels inside the valve body. Once I was able to get the old one out, I cleaned up the inside of the valve body using an acidic shower cleaner to remove any calcium and lime build up.Installing the new one was fairly easy. I used the included silicon lubricant packet and applied it to the new valve and also around the interior of the valve body. Installing the new one required a bit of light tapping with a hammer (do not tap on the brass stem - there is a plastic piece included that fits over the brass stem and rests against the plastic body of the valve - I was able to make a wood tap block by drilling out a hole for the brass stem). I lightly tapped on the valve body to set it and reinstalled the retaining clip. The only issue I had was that the instructions were unclear as to the position of the brass stem. The first time I installed it, it was upside down (reversed 180 degrees), which means the shower was running when I turned the water back on. It was a simple thing to spin it 180 degrees to make it operate properly. I'm very happy with the quality of the replacement and it works 100% as designed. Now my shower is easy to operate and is no longer difficult to turn off.

Fit perfectly.......
It wasn't as easy to replace as I thought it would be. There was alot of twisting and pulling with the cartridge removal tool I bought for the job. Unfortunately in my case there was much corrosion to contend with. The old cartridge broke while being removed and there were pieces to be cleaned out with the use of a needle nose plier, but once the debris was removed the cartridge with a little pressure fit snuggly in place. My suggestion is to buy the replacement kit and make everything new. Do not try to mix old with new as it makes the installation difficult. The lever is now easier to move and works very well with the new cartridge.

Exact OEM Replacement Part
Exact OEM replacement part. Fits great and works so smooth. I will say getting the old one out was a bear. After that debacle the new went in perfectly.

Do not use lubricant in package!! Use silicone faucet grease!!
We originally used an off brand cartridge which made a very loud noise when the faucet was turned on. After some research we found that was a common problem with the off brands so we ordered the Moen cartridge replacement. It does not make the sound, which is great! I would have given it 5 stars but the lubricant that comes in the package is not good! We put the included lubricant on the cartridge and installed it, after having to shove it in quite forcefully, the faucet would then not turn off at all!!We took the cartridge out and one of the side pieces of rubber totally fell apart! Luckily, we had the old cartridge so we used one of those rubber pieces. We then put the silicone faucet grease on all of the rubber parts. The cartridge went in so easy this time!! And it works with no noise!

Go with the original product
I bought a substitute valve as my old one was getting very hard to turn on and off. Unfortunately it started leaking about a week after installing and we couldn't fully turn off the water. So I bought an original Moen product replacement. Watch the Moen install video. It's a bit difficult to pull the old valve out so I used the valve puller that came with the off brand valve and then popped this one in very easily. Comes with a little bag of lubricant. Highly suggest going with the original product. Is working just like new again - I can turn the valve with my little finger.

Shower Cartridge lasted almost 20 years
Went on Youtube and found two relevant videos on the topic from: "Check It Out !!!" and "Stephanie Vandaelle"Cartridge is about 20 years old in a building that has a lot of mineral in the water. So lots of build up and really appreciate how long it's lasted.Shower handle fell off because the rod or stem was pretty much rotted away. Unfortunately rotating it with the plastic removal tool only helps to loosen it a bit but not by much. Couldn't use Cartridge Removal Tool, the metal one, because the stem or rod fell off and you need to screw on to that to be able to pull it out.Tools:Adjustable WrenchDrill and Drill BitAny long wood screwPry barWood plank or Long Metal Rod to Brace against TileCutter to mark and make drilling easyManual Screw DriverHeatgun or Hair DryerActual work time: 12 minsLooking for my disorganized tools: 45 minsDisassembled shower handle until I could access the shower cartridge and manifold. Turned OFF water via manifold (usually counter clockwise until it stops). Apartment building here so if your water shutoff might be in a different location.Drilled bottom of cartridge, the plastic part. Easier if you mark where you'll drill with a cutter so the drill bit finds purchase otherwise it'll slip around. Make sure it's straight as possible to not damage the pipes. Make a judgment call on whatever size you want based on the wood screw you plan on using. Makes sure it's not too big. I used a random wood screw that long enough to pry off of.Used a cheap $10 heat gun on the pipes until it was warm. Used plastic tool to rotate slightly ( not completely since the top of the cartridge hits the pipes and can only be rotated 180 degrees once it's actually out) and loosen cartridge clockwise. This absolutely helped to loosen the cartridge almost right away. No struggling at all. Things would have been worse without it.Used a manual screwdriver so I could better control the force on the woodscrew. Damaged pipes are more expensive work so be patient and careful. Then used prybar on the woodscrew. Metal rod or wood plank to brace on tile ( and protect tile) and leverage prybar off that. Do it SLOWLY and CONTROLLED and do not yank agressively. Be careful not to go ham as to not damage the metal pipe. Used heat gun again when encountered resistance in pipes. Once head of cartridge is stuck and no longer embedded in the pipe and have room to turn, I switched to the Moen Plastic Removal Tool and an adjustable wrench. Didn't need to yank it out after that just did a back and forth motion mostly going clockwise.Voila! Cartridge came out easy. I am thankful to the Youtube videos for such a great idea and my humble and mighty heat gun for helping a STUCK cartridge with a BROKEN STEM so easily done in less than 15 mins.By the way, the shower handle position will be in the middle position. So you might want to move it clockwise until it closes so you don't get a burst of water from the tub faucet once you turn the water back on. I completely forgot about this and found out the hard way.Talked to a retired handyman and he said once you encounter a good deal of resistance in the shower handle, should be a good time to replace the cartridge. I think I will take his advice from here on and save myself so much trouble.

Fixed the no cold water issue immediately after replacing
My guest shower which hasn't been used for years stopped pumping cold water out, as a result you could only take scalding hot showers. Replacing the existing Moen 1222 cartridge (cost $64.70) with a new one fixed the issue immediately! The only difficult part was removing the existing Moen 1222 cartridge--I had to buy a Moen cartridge puller (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B09CGDS7SP) for $18.99 to remove it. After removing the existing one, surprisingly it did not look damaged. I was expecting the rubber parts would be torn, but everything looked okay from examining it from the outside. Anyhow since it is old I surmised the issue was somewhere inside the cartridge which was not obvious from examining the exterior. I was thinking of buying a cheaper "knockoff" cartridge instead of the brand name Moen one, but I read they often fail and don't last too long so I didn't want to take that chance. I had no trouble installing it after applying the lubricant all over the cartridge and it worked immediately after reinstalling everything and turning the water back on so I'm glad this product fixed the issue. Hope this genuine Moen 1222 cartridge will last as long as the previous one (about 20 years) or longer.
