ALL STYLE and SUBSTANCE
I discovered this under-rated Indian artist in the ALL TOO HUMAN exhibition at the Tate Britain gallery. I had not heard of Fracis Newton Souza before but his paintings are colourful, striking, bold and powerful and were on par with other well known artists like Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud who were also in the exhibition. I was dismayed and suprised to discover that the Tate bookshop said that they could find no books on his works! However during an internet search I found this coffee table book about him. There are over two hundred high quality coloured reproductions of his paintings and around sixty black and white plates of his drawings. Aziz Kurtha's accompanying text is well written and informative without being pretentious and priority is given to the pictures instead having tomes of text which a lot of art books have. This book has both STYLE AND SUBSTANCE ! Get a copy if you can find it.
