Very sturdy, great value
Very sturdy once everything is fit together and a few pieces of gear are installed to keep it from racking. Heavy gauge steel. Captive nuts riveted in almost everywhere. Many of the parts are reversible which makes it hard to screw up, just pay attention to the numbering and eyelet direction on the main vertical posts. Clever design keeps the overall parts number fairly low, good job from their design team. A bit awkward to build at a few steps since several pieces have to be held in place off the floor to bolt it all together. It definitely helps to have an extra pair of hands or perhaps a few small clamps could stand in to hold things in place while getting bolts started. Overall build is pretty simple, just bolting the corners together. You might consider measuring corner to corner as you put the final grunt on the bolts to keep everything square since there's really no corner/racking bracing, but the its quite close even without this effort. Just about everything required comes with the kit including wrenches for the bolts. The loose nut caster interface will actually require two of the smaller wrenches but only one is included. Not a big deal. One or two steps in the instructions make no sense, like instructing the consumer to put a washer on the back side of an interface then use a wrench to hold the washer while tightening the bolt. I'm sorry, do what now!?!? Luckily it is easy enough to figure out, but I think they skipped proofreading the instructions. A supply of cage nuts and bolts are included, but I went with Rack Studs instead. Despite a few very minor flaws still giving it 5 stars for outstanding value, chonkiness factor per dollar, simple and clever design, and fit for purpose. Open design makes installing sliding rails a lot easier. Great for a home lab. Unless you want enclosed side panels this is a great product. Use the money saved to buy rails, shelves, etc.

Very pleased; other reviewers are correct - measure twice, assemble.. well.. probably twice LOL
Thanks to the other reviewers comments about poor instructions, I tried to avoid the common pit falls, of not measuring correctly, and having to tear down to adjust the depth, etc. But, even after studying the instructions and videos, I still had to adjust the depth once because I was a inch off. So, the instructions aren't great, but they aren't terrible, and a youtube search finds enough videos to help. But there's one thing that still wasn't really clear to me, and obviously I got wrong once - When adjusting the depth, if it says 1/1 for 24" - that means the first holes should show those numbers. If you do that, everything is precise. Overall, though, I really didn't have any problems assembling it, I probably would have had it done by myself in about 45min, but I was trying to be deliberate and avoid a tear-down (oops). But if you have enough room, light, the right tools, and have it on material that allows you to move it, lay it down, roll it over, etc. without fear of your floors being damaged, it's pretty easy. Now, it's nice they include tools, but I used my own which made the job faster/easier. I really liked all of the hardware they supply. They include extra nuts/bolts, so no issues there (they may have listened to past reviews?!), and especially the rack bolts, and cable management bars on the sides were great - great quality, and I didn't think i'd need them or use them, but they ended up being better than what I had. Packaging and shipping were great - I thought the box would be bigger, but it really isn't, but do your driver a favor and help them unload it! It was well packaged and no damaged, missing pieces, but the packing materials did take the brunt of it. SOLID - VERY SOLID. Surpringsly, but not due to other reviewers comments, it doesn't budge. Even without installing a full-length shelf in the middle, though I'm sure it'll help. I cut down a piece of plywood and through on top for my wifi, but I will eventually put my kvm moniter on top. I haven't even bolted down the top, and I have no concerns about that. I was worried that going from an ikea desk (;-\) to an actual metal rack would introduce some resonante noise, but even as open-post and equipment exposed, it's just as quiet as before. Very happy, hope I don't outgrow it too any time soon! Though, i have ZERO complaints on the price due to the great quality and extras, and free shipping... If I did outgrow, I wouldn't hesitate to get the 42U version.

Highly recommend - extremely solid and comes with everything you need
Extremely solid, well built rack that comes with everything you need to assemble and use it. I had no problems with their packaging, I actually thought they somewhat over-packaged it for all the interior card board and materials separating everything considering almost everything is steel that isn't going to break in transit. I had a HUGE pile of packaging to dispose of after unpacking. The package is very heavy though, so I suppose if the shipping company was extremely abusive the heavy steel could break out of the cardboard with enough force. I would not blame that on StarTech though as I've seen how it is packaged when it arrives fully enact and there is a lot of packaging and tape used. I have seen complaints about damage during shipping; Bad shipping is bad shipping, I had no problems at all though. The instructions are not great but not bad and they come ready to be kept in a 3 ring binder for future reference which I thought was a nice touch. In total I was very happy with everything about this rack. FYI - I am an IT professional and I've used racks in a few jobs before but I've never assembled a full 42U height rack or owned one myself until now.

What a beast!
It's a beefy beast! But assembly was a bit of a challenge as I had no one to help me. The instructions weren't 100% clear on a few things but that was OK as it was easy to figure out anyway. One problem I had was that I misjudged the depth to assemble because I'm changing over from old 1970's racks to this. I wanted to have a little extra room inside the rack but I set it up for too much depth to begin with. I just installed a few horizontal rails to hold things together then I unbolted onside at a time and shortened it. Of course I did it the hard way, I always do everything the hard way first. But now that I know the next one will be a lot easier to build. I also love the wide casters, they roll over gaps in the floor effortlessly. One thing I was freaking out over is the height. Everything here is carpeted (I HATE THE CARPET!) and because of the carpet they won't fit through the doors and I have to tilt them over and drag them through then stand them back up again. I was really freaking out over this thinking I wouldn't be able to get them into their room without taking the door frame apart. Because I'm assembling them in one room, moving them to another room to populate them then rolling them into the server room. I've decided that the carpet must go (THANK THE GODS!) and that solves the problem. One a bare floor I get about 2mm clearance through the door frame. I hate carpet and I hate these short ass 80" doorways! In the end these racks are a huge improvement over my 1970's 29U racks, I can get more equipment in fewer racks and reclaim some floor space. I will definitely buy again.

Good rack but verify the depth of your closet / location.
This is a solid well built rack. Like many customers I had issues with the instructions. I had to consult a couple of videos in order to get through one specific set of steps. Specifically on page nine of the manual "Assemble the Rack" steps one through four were challenging for me. My biggest issue is the unpleasant discovery I made after I had begun assembly. The variable depth of the rack is great and I went with the smallest depth which is listed as 22 inches. The closet in my home office where the rack will go has sliding doors where I would have one or two inches of clearance from the front of the rack to the closet door. However the actual depth of the rack is 27 inches due to the base brackets (where the castors are fastened) extending the total depth of the front and back of the rack. It would have been nice to have more grounding points on the rack. I do

Very nice design, sturdy and high quality workmanship.
I had been considering the 8U version of this same rack for quite some time, but when Prime day rolled around, this 12U unit was actually on sale for less than the 8U rack. So I took the plunge because I needed a place to set up a renewed Dell R710 server. It comes with a lot of nice extras that show StarTech has put more effort into its units than most of the knock-offs. It's made of very sturdy, powder coated steel. I really appreciate that it came with *all* of the tools that you will need to put it together -- including 2 wrenches and a Philips screwdriver. The instructions are well written and come in a nice little plastic pouch should you need them again. More than enough hardware included as well. Be sure to measure your server before putting this together. I ended up going about six inches longer because of the measurements listed in the manual. Measure the mounting hardware of your server and make sure you get within a few inches of the fully-expanded rack-mounting. It wasn't too tough to adjust the size, though. It works well with a Dell R710 server (see photo) and I plan to add beneath and possibly a fan/power-strip. It's supposed to be able to hold 1200 pounds and that's probably true. I'm not sure how easy it would be to move with that much weight. It's pretty hefty and the addition of a huge server makes it tough enough to move already. But it's not made to be mobile all the time. It's a good way to get things set up and put it in a cool closet when you are done. I'm happy with this and I'd definitely buy from StarTech again. The quality is much better than what I expected. Solid 5 stars.

Great rack, can't believe I waited so long to get it!
This is a fantastic bit of kit. It has clearly written, easy to understand assembly instructions, it comes with the tools needed for assembly, and even has a few spare washers and bolts. It took about less than an hour to set up. It is sturdy enough for a rack mounted server or two and some networking gear with a UPS. They even include cage nuts and screws so it's possible to start populating the rack immediately. It's got 42U of rack space, all clearly labeled, making it a breeze to fit gear as needed. Startech also includes cable management, so you you can keep the rack organized when you need it. In terms of looks, it's pretty standard, with a nice finish that does not feel thin or cheap. I'm using this in my home lab, and it really helped me organize my rack gear and get it all installed without much of a fight or hassle. Does require a two person lift - sure you can show off and lift it alone, however it's just ungainly and not balanced well in the package, so you're just better off with a two person lift and move.

This should last awhile
I got this to replace another rack I had. The other rack was enclosed and I used it to keep a lot of my stuff in, however it started to get cramped in there and I needed a new one. I decided to splurge and get a big boy rack. I put this together by myself and didn't have too many issues. The instructions were not that great but it was pretty straight forward. I like that it has wheels on it so I can move it around. The quality is really great and I ended up hanging on it like a monkey to see if it could support me. No issues there. I wish it had better cable management. It does come with some connectors, but I would have liked to see something I can use inside instead of outside. Still a great rack.
