a safety upgrade worth the cost
My daughter recently 'inherited' the family 1988 Volvo 740. Back in the day, this was quite the performance luxury car. $24k new in 1988 equates to over $50k today. Time marches on, and some of the features of this car are outdated and commonplace. It has a quad headlight setup: two 4x6s on each side. The outermost headlights are high/low, and the inner ones are high. The sealed beam units it came with were fine in the day, but they are getting a little harder to find, and the light output is meager compared to today's HID counterparts. There are plenty of sealed LED units available, but I hate the look of the rectangle headlight with a 15 LED array, and I'd prefer glass instead of plastic for durability reasons. So, the Hella conversion kit seemed to be the only viable option based on my needs/wants. Forget getting a discount! They will be about $100 if you get them new. Just do it.Installation was easy, although my particular installation was slightly tricky. I had to install the lamp and dust cover before installing the headlight because the support bracket got in the way, and I wouldn't have been able to get the dust cover on any other way. This means I'll have to remove the headlight trim bezel and the headlight retaining ring to take the entire headlight out if I have to change the bulb. Oh well. The light pattern is drastically improved compared to the sealed beam bulbs, and the light output is better. The lamps that come with this kit are standard H4 60/55W units, but there are brighter and whiter options available. I would hesitate to use higher wattage lamps because the wiring may not support the increased wattage, but there are plenty of high output 60/55W lamps available, however they are likely to burn out quicker. So, for $100, I have better looking headlights that put out more (and better quality) light than the sealed beam headlights. I think it's worth $100 to have a safer car for my daughter to drive.PS: just fork over the $100. I tried an "amazon warehouse deal" on a used-like new set, only to find some jackwagon took the Hella headlights out and replaced them with used and nasty sealed beam headlights. So I had to return them and order new. Next on my list is the H1 high beam headlights to finish the job.

Well made product.
For anybody installing LED bulbs in these, you have to cut out the center of the silicone cover that goes on the rear of the headlamp. Otherwise you can't get the bulb through the cover. But when you do that, the cover does not fit tightly against the housing. And when using LED bulbs, you have to use the adapter harness to get the LED bulbs to work correctly. I bought the Torchbeam LED bulbs that have the 3 terminal harness attached, but if you plug it into the factory harness on the car, the high beam is LOW, and the low beam is HIGH. WEIRD!!! Other than that, they work fine. Don't forget to search online for how to adjust these E code lamps correctly. Hope this info is helpful for you.

bright lights!!!! Joke!
I bought these lights because I need brighter lights than I can normally buy. The review I read said that these are really bright , but the police had never stopped him. I under stood after I had installed them, They weren't as bright as the ones I had taken out. The instructions I received with them said I needed an adaptor that was included because I had a chev S10, true because the lights for my S10 has a off set pin, Sure enough they included the adaptors but they were the wrong ones. This all for $112 dollars. I am real happy. Not!

bad light projection
The light projection is very bad from these. I upgraded the bulbs to phillips and it is still not projecting as good as standard 4565 halogen .

The housing for the bulbs are good. The reflector inside seems to project more like a projector head light.... it would have gotten more stars but it seems like hella shipped the conversion kit with 5 dollar halogen bulbs.... I will be upgrading them in the near future..... otherwise a ok product... not what I would expect from a well known off road lighting company

An excellent upgrade. Well worth the money and NOT difficult.
Purchased these lights for a 1984 Volvo 245 Turbo. Fit and are excellent the mechanical aspects of the installation were absolutely straightforward and easy. The lack of ELECTRICAL instructions, however, meant that I ended up swapping pins around twice in the included adapter pigtails. No changes were needed but the research I'd done suggested that I would need to change pins around. I did. And then had to change back. It only added, perhaps an hour to a simple and interesting project NSF the results are AMAZING.The light quality is a huge upgrade. Definitely recommended.

Best lights you can buy
I have a set of these in my '83 Volvo 240, and just bought another set for my girlfriend's '82 240. They are, hands down, the best headlights you can purchase for older vehicles. While they aren't technically 'legal' for road use, I've never been hassled by anyone in law enforcement for having them. In face, I installed a set of HID bulbs into these lenses and was *never* flashed for bright lights. DOT lenses require some amount of upscatter to illuminate road signs, whereas the ECE have an uptick on the right side for this. The upscatter pattern in DOT lenses produces a lot of glare when paired with HIDs, whereas the ECE lenses keeps the same sharp cutoff with the uptick. Very much how projector lenses perform.I can't recommend these enough. The price might seem high, but once you try them you'll love them. I guarantee it.
