Do the tools have some resistance when opening them? As in do the other tools stay put when using?

Yes there is some resistance to keep the allen wrenches in place. The knife, screw driver and box wrenches lock in place when fully extended. I highly recommend this excellent tool.

does this work on schwinn bikes

All bikes being equal I believe that this tool will work on all bikes. I have an older Trek bike and it works perfectly.

Is this toolkit useful for bike assembly?

I will only use this tool for emergency(road side) repairs or minor things like tighten a few screws. Here's my reasons: 1) I have an old expensive racing road bike and is difficult to find parts and I m afraid some of the tool might stripe the components 2) the handle on the tool is not very long so it's difficult to apply even pressures when turning and it might slip and accidentally stripe the parts I m working on. I wouldn't use this to assemble a bike but I carry this tool every time I ride since it contains almost everything I needed.   Also, it's very well built.
