The Non-Stop Discussion Workbook: Problems for Intermediate and Advanced Students of English (Second Edition) 2nd Edition

This textbook is truly unique in the EFL/ESL world. Unlike other discussion textbooks that deal with the everyday, boring, how-was-your-weekend type discussion questions, this book takes the opposite approach. It stimulates discussion by presenting students with a moral dilemma (e.g. who should get the one heart for a heart transplant operation), and students must work together to come up with a decision, plan, justification, and so on as part of the group work.Note that this textbook isn't intended to teach functional usage, grammar, vocabulary, etc., but is simply for getting students talking. For that it is great. One caveat is that the topics would be quite difficult for low-level English learners. I would say this is more appropriate for upper-intermediate and advanced learners.

Can be modified for advanced beginner. Dated material takes some explanation, but still very valuable.

I am teaching English in China. Recently, I borrowed this book from a friend and it has been a lifesaver! Having to come up with topics was a chore but now...This book has each leson split up into four parts. First, students READ through the situation and then CONSIDER outcomes. Next they DISCUSS the questions. And if that hasn't filled up enough time, there is an EXTEND section that gives you questions to guide and continue the discussion.Situations covered include: what would you take if you had to live on an uninhabited island, who gets the heart transplant, what advice do you give to people and so on.If you are going to be teaching free talk anytime so, get this book. It's, well, fabulous.
