does this unit measure parts?

Yes, through the software that comes with it.  It's best to download the latest version from AmScope's web site though, and you need to calibrate it with the included calibration slide. I have found that at high magnification I can reliably get to .001" accuracy but because it is using the left lens there is a slight skew to the image, tilting the part slightly or rotating the head can eliminate that issue, but then if you are looking through the right eye piece that image will be more skewed.  That said, small price to pay for the functionality you are getting, to get better optics a Nikon or Leica will cost you $5,000-$10,000 to do the same thing.

Question 2

Can you purchase software to capture still's using this scope? Also does anyone recommend good software for it?

If you purchase the AMScope camera, the software comes with it, not only can you capture images with it, but you also get fairly accurate measurement capabilities included too, just make sure to get the newest version of the camera, older ones have slower refresh rates.

Question 3

The specs list the shipping weight as 61 pounds, while the item weight is 3.2 pounds. Why the difference?

No idea - looks like a typo.  The one we have is a beast - I know as I tried to move it from one table to another just yesterday.  If you stick with the 61 pounds as the item weight you won't be far off.

Question 4

Does the inluded ring light cast a blue light as photo's appear or is it white light? I have a ring light that is useless due to it's blue cast throw.

Accepted Answer

The photo shows it incorrectly.  It is cool white 6,000K tone or maybe 5,800K.   I think they were trying to convey that it is an LED light not a halogen light. It is not blue at all. Brightness and zone are adjustable but color temperature is not.
