From the perspective of a Nikon photography-equipment user.
This is the finest pair of binoculars that I've ever had. They're performers. They truly produce and are worth the investment. I love the ULTRA-wide angle of view as well as the excellent glass and well-thought design and craftsmanship. I use these as a means of seeking out wildlife, landscape and other types of nature-photography subject. I also use Nikon photography equipment, so I might be a little biased, since I've been a Nikon loyalist for awhile. :-) These are excellent for seeking out something off in the distance, plus they're extremely bright. The excellent glass and coatings, combined with great technology make these so superior to other binoculars that I tested. The wide field of view makes for quick movements with an amazingly steadfast find-and-focus capability. Basically, they're quick. Another great feature is the compact design and size. I can easily stuff these in almost all of my camera bags. So, if any of you are nature photographers in need of a good, dependable, small pair of binoculars, I highly recommend the Monarch 7 8x30's. They're a great all-around set of glass to have in your camera bag. 8-16-15 UPDATE : After using these for the past few months, I've continued to be impressed. They're allowing me to continue my photography with ease. They weigh less than a pound, so transporting is no problem. They are very sharp and quick to focus. Tracking of moving objects is simple task. I continue to feel that I made the correct decision.

Great for bird watching
These binoculars are sharp and clear, quick and easy to focus, lightweight and easy to use. 8 x 30 is great for bird watching, both near and far - sufficient magnification with a wide field of view that makes it easier to find your subject and easier to hold steady than higher magnifications. Coated optics provide bright view. Polycarbonate material is tough and resistant to scratches and dings. Lens covers (4) are attached and easily removed and replaced without risk of being lost.

The little bino that can
This is a great 8x binocular with only one very minor issue. The quality of the binocular and the clarity of the images are top notch. It's less than a pound, which also makes it a handy travel bino. You can hardly feel it on your neck. Speaking of the neck; it comes with an excellent neck strap that is partly responsible for that light feel (especially if you keep it short). Superb field of view makes it so much easier to follow the birds hopping from branch to branch. The only marginal issue with this binocular is the eye relief. If you wear eyeglasses, depending on the design of your eyeglasses you might not be able to achieve that superb field of view. I can make it by pressing the eyecups slightly into my eyeglasses, pushing them back to get the full view. It could have used another couple of millimeters of eye relief. This is a very small binocular compared to the regular (or even compact) sizes I'm accustomed to use. Therefore, when I first handled it in the field, it felt like a toy binocular. However, after a few days, it started to feel normal and now it's my first choice especially when it comes to warbles and fast birds. UPDATE February 2017: After a couple of years of use in the field, I can say without any reservation that if I had to have only one binocular this would be it. It's so easy and comfortable to use because of its light weight and wide field of view, any other binocular feels cumbersome when you pick it up after this one.

just right for me
i never researched any product longer nor dug deeper for more info nor read more reviews than researching these binos. at the end, i went with the nikon name and warranty. after trying out several models at the store, i chose these 8's over the 10x30 'cause i decided it was better to have more light gathering at dusk than magnification. i first used these the other evening at a guitar concert where i was back maybe 70' or so and they delivered incredibly sharp and crystal clear images of the smallest details such as fingers on frets and picking strings gathering only light from the stage. focusing is easy, i have progressive lens and i keep the eyepieces in when wearing glasses, as recommended, and they work great - superb. light weight for sure. they get 4 stars instead of 5 'cause the front lens cap system is downright goofy and 'cause the neck strap does not have quick disconnects near the camera body; it would be nice to be able to quickly jettison the neck strap such as at the occasion at the concert hall. i specifically chose the 30 objective lens diameter to keep these small enough to fit in pockets of cargo pants and they do fit sans case and strap. the strap is neck padded and fine but overkill for me; i will be looking for something else as well as be looking for a drawstring bag in lieu of the case on certain occasions. case is fine and well padded and is great for storage and tranport but overkill when backpacking or day tripping. regarding all the technology nikon advertises at its website regarding its lens system and related coatings and pass thru light measurements and distortion values, etc. - believe them. i tried out some really expensive binos with or near these specs and this is a fine product without breaking the bank for that little bit more image clarity and definition at the next price point.

Breathtaking optics, lightweight to carry, incredible precision instrument, great value.
These binoculars have breathtaking optics with a field of view that is an amazing 435-feet at 1,000-yards. That wide field of view is one of my favorite attributes of these binoculars. I find that the wide FOV makes for a more enjoyable experience. This is a superb image. I use my binoculars for birding, wildlife observation and hiking. I use them almost every day, so they have to be very comfortable and practical to carry. These are a joy to use. This is also important because I actually grab these all the time to use because of that comfort - this is not a binocular that will sit on a shelf gathering dust due to them being heavy and a pain to use. The overall "feel" is that of a small compact, lightweight binocular, yet they feel exceptionally durable for such an incredible precision instrument. I am an eyeglass wearer, and the eye relief is good. The diopter adjustment is excellent also. You can feel the quality when you use the adjustment and focus rings. Smooth and precise. This may sound trivial, but I also like the way Nikon has designed the strap system. It takes a bit of time to get it properly adjusted the first time, but once it is properly done, it works very well. These binoculars are very lightweight to begin with, and then with the excellent strap system, they are a joy to carry - rather than a pair of heavy uncomfortable binoculars that are a pain to actually use in the field (and hiking). The protective eyecups work well too, and are very easy to use. They both stay attached when you remove them, and it's easy to put them back on. Simple. Easy. Practical. These focus down to 7.8 feet, which is nice if you need to use them for close focus work. My needs do not require this, but for those who do need it, it is a nice feature. These are fully waterproof. They can actually be submerged in water, up to a depth of 1-meter. They are fogproof. The optics are fully multi-coated. And regarding the optics, Nikon is legendary as having world-class optics in both their cameras and binoculars. It is amazing to me that they can provide this level of quality at this price-point. You can read the professional reviews of the Nikon Monarch 7 series and it is apparent that Nikon "owns" the midrange of the binocular market. Several reviews have said the Monarch series binocular is comparable with binoculars in the $1,000 and up range. I just think that few companies can rival Nikon when it comes to world-class optics. These are an incredible value for the price. They are a joy to use. They won't sit at home unused due to being heavy, uncomfortable and a "pain" to actually use in the field. Anyway, I hope this is helpful.

Eye piece covers way too big and just fall off ...
Eye piece covers way too big and just fall off, very poorly designed. When I called Nikon they suggested using duct tape inside the lens covers to make them stay on!

AMAZING!
Can't say enough about the quality and optical performance of these binoculars. As a longtime Nikon SLR camera user, I was expecting high quality optical glass, but was still very pleasantly surprised. I can't believe Nikon got such great glass and a wide field of view into such a small, light, rugged package! They capture a lot of light which gives a nice, bright view even during twilight hours, and the rubberized coating provides a very comfortable non-slip feel. They also feel pretty much indestructible - nice to know since they'll be going rock climbing. 8x30 is also perfect for me. Didn't want to lug around anything bigger/heavier, and with narrower FOV (e.g., 8x22 which they replaced) I spent too much time hunting for objects, especially moving ones, and they weren't nearly as bright. So, very happy with purchase. Will be putting these to the test on Safari in August (second time), where a quality pair of rugged binoculars can definitely make a difference.

Very Good Value for a Light Bino
I already own a Monarch 5 8x42 which I like very well. My wife also liked it but found it heavy so I bought her the 8x30, which is about half the weight, as a present. She is very pleased with it and so am I. Clarity, depth, and edge-to-edge sharpness are all first rate. As well, the 8x30 has a viewing angle of over 8 degrees which is 1/3 greater than my 8x42. The loss of light gathering ability because of the smaller front ocular is unnoticeable during the day and hardly noticeable even at dusk. I would have been happier to buy a Monarch 5 in 8x30 but no such product exists, and I had to spend the extra money for the Monarch 7 line. But the cost was not that high and getting any substantial improvement in the view would have cost a fortune - I was unwilling to consider Swarovski, Leitz, or Nikon's own Edge line. For the money, these are exceptional.
