Are there hidden snaps under the closure?

No there are not snaps hidden under the closure. I usually just have the closure undone. I have been very impressed with the bag.

What's the padding like inside (especially for the lap top?)

There is no padding inside the case. If you are planning to use the case to carry a laptop, I would strongly recommend adding some sort of padding.I had several old laptop carrying cases in the attic and one of them had a removable padded sleeve which fit perfectly into the leather case.

is the bag without anything in it heavy (weight wise) on its own? I need soft, light weight leather bag.

The bag by itself is relatively light weight, considering it is sturdy leather construction. However, it is surprisingly large and it would be very easy to add one more book and then another and get to a heavy situation pretty easily. I find it very comfortable to carry but you might want to look for something smaller if weight is an issue.

I’m uncertain of the exact country of origin, but I believe they are from the Middle East or South Asia.
